None of these are mine - two are my niece's and one is my friend's - but today we all did a fundraiser walk for a lung cancer charity and they advertised that a local vet's office had donated shirts for the first 125 dogs. The shirts say "I'm fur a cure".

There were a TON of dogs, but I think we attracted a lot of attention for a couple reasons. (1) We had 6 people, and 6 dogs. (2) I think these three have an odd 'dog family' sort of look about them, even though they aren't "related".

All our dogs were such good pups and great troopers.

Other picture is the one cat that came to the walk. Brave cat, and the guy who owned him. I'm making sure my cats don't find out though, since they'll probably be very jealous.

Jens' half-brother (and my mom's dog) Harley.

Jens just can't understand why Tortilla won't be his friend. He always tries to go where she is, usually resulting in her hissing and eventually leaving.

This is Cody. He was rescued from Las Vegas shelter by Great Pyrenees Rescue. They thought he was Pyrenees pup at the time. All white and fluffy. Well they weren't too happy but didn't have the heart to return him to the vegas kill shelter. They then got in touch with Golden Rescue thinking he was a golden. And we picked him up. Well he isn't a golden. But has a Lab head. His fur isn't quite like a lab more like a Pyrenees so we know he is a mutt with maybe Pyrenees mix. And yes he sleeps with his tongue sticking out. He came to us about 8 years ago??

And he is the groomer for Morgan (aka fatso, sluggo...) a big love bug rag doll. He really does go limp on you when you pick him up. You can cradle him, throw over your shoulder... but above all he's tad lazy and have Cody groom him. Morgan isn't too happy because Cody stopped. Sometimes, Cody isn't in the mood and will turn his head away. This is usually followed by Morgan getting up and flopping in front of Codys face. And if that doesn't work, Morgan will take a swipe at Cody's muzzle. Cody then obliges.

What a sweetie, Smilingcat. Whatever his pedigree is, he looks like a great dog. Glad you found one another!

Joe, in one of his favorite spots. (Sorry about the bad focus; I needed more coffee, maybe.)

Santa's Little Helpers, Sylphide and Amor Christmas Day 2011

Santa's Little Helpers, Sylphide and Amor Christmas Day 2011.

Sylphide, 8 years old, is on the left. Her eyes are a little glazed since she's on pain meds right now. She fractured her foot -- I have no idea how. She's very rambunctious and always active -- so it must have been in one of her wild races and leaps. Amor, to the right, is 5 1/2, and also very active. I adopted him from a local rescue when he was 18 months old, the victim of severe neglect. His ears were in such horrifying, irreparable condition that they had to be removed (from the inside, and sewn back up so you can't tell). This means our little guy is deaf but you wouldn't know it. He's a trooper, and is well trained to hand commands. It took me a lot of time to teach him to come when called though! He responds to hand claps, gestures and finger points. They are my babies...

    Nick,
Such cute babies! So glad that Amor has a good forever home, and obviously a good vet.

I had a dog that went deaf with age, and I was so glad that I used hand signals while training her when she was younger. At night I signaled her it was time to come in by flashing the porch light. But during the day, getting her attention when her back was turned to me was difficult.

The flashing light is a great idea! Amor has had a Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy (both ears). He doesn't hear regular sounds and voice, but seems to hear loud claps and bangs. So I use a hand clap to get his attention. He never knows where the location of a sound comes from -- he just seems to hear a faint something and starts looking around to see what it is. He's doing an amazing job compensating with vision. He's much more visually alert than most dogs, who rely on their hearing. If I'm up and about, Sylphide might be snoozing and not really paying attention unless she hears me open something or do something that interests her. Amor, on the other hand, pays very close attention to everything I do to make sure he's not "missing out".

Today James and I adopted "Walter" and brought him home. A shy rescue dog to match our other shy rescue dog, although Walter is much more timid. He hasn't been as anxious at home as he was at the Humane Society and he is settling in nicely. He's already decided that the tempur-paedic mattress in our guest bedroom is the comfiest thing he's ever felt! Walter came from a hoarder rescue... 100 malnourished dogs with sarcoptic mange and no fur! He had been at the Humane Society since August. James fell in love with him upon sight, but we spent the weekend mulling it over.

    What a handsome man!

Thanks, Pll! Reesha, Walter looks lovely! How wonderful that you gave him a home over the holidays. I'm sure he's a very happy boy, now. It sounds like he came out of a very traumatic situation and will need some time to recover, settle in, and get used to being a beloved family member.
