    I had a decent 3-mile run on the treadmill last night. Slowly but surely, I'm increasing my speed. My left glute (where it meets the hamstring) is still bothering me though and has been since Thanksgiving. It's not so bad during runs, but I'm in a fair amount of pain afterwards. I made an appointment with my sports medicine doc for tomorrow. I saw him and a PT last year when my right hip was bothering me with good success. This feels more like an overuse issue to me though, so I'm bracing myself for the inevitable "you need to rest" instruction. Grrr. It seems like everytime I get into a good groove, some medical issue intervenes. Wish me luck....

    Good luck tomorrow Indy. I understand completely. I got an ugly 6 mile run in today and my legs just ache. I haven't had a decent run in a couple of weeks and am so ready to get this marathon over with. My second 20 mile run is this weekend and I guess I will hobble through it. I have an appointment tomorrow with my doc as well just to be sure my pain is from sore legs and not something that will be debilitating later if I push through it.

    Thanks, gang!

    @Bike Chick: do your legs feel sore in an injury sort of way or from inadequate rest? When I was riding 5k miles a year, my legs would sometimes feel chronically heavy and tired. That's when o knew I was just momentarily overtrained. I hope that's all you are dealing with, although even that would be a bummer with a marathon around the corner. Good luck with your 20 miler. I can only dream of such distances at this point. If I can get past this current issue, I might consider actually setting a half marathon goal for next year, but my primarily goal is much more modest. I just want to stick with something long enough to get back in better shape.

    @Limewave: you are fast, girl. I was reading some older race/running threads a while back. Some were from you when you first started competing. You have gotten so much faster over the years. It's impressive.

    5K on the treadmill last night. I managed to run about a half mile at 7.5 mph (8 m/m) pace without too much trouble except for cardiovascularly. That's a new one for me, so I think I'm going to throw more faster paced stuff in every once in awhile.

    Looks like I have a bit of tendonitis in my hamstring. I have an order to see my old PT, who did a bang up job of getting my right hip in order last year. Hopefully, I'll be good to go soon. The doc didn't tell me to stop running altogether unless it continues to get worse. I'm not supposed to increase speed or volume though. My first PT appointment is Tuesday, so I'm reserving judgment on that until the PT gives me a once over. He's kind of anti-running as it is, so we'll see.

    Ask the PT if it could be your piriformis.

    Despite the bad cold, I was able to slog out planned 3.5 milers on Monday and Wednesday. Took it easy both by design and necessity. Yesterday, I saw an eagle, perched on a rail above a ramp on the MUT where I run. It was amazing. Two weeks ago, we saw this eagle or one of his pals pluck a squirrel from the ground and carry it away. Very sad for the poor squirrel.

    I've had piriformis issues before from cycling and this feels pretty different from that. Plus, none of the common stretches that help alleviate piriformis syndrome have helped at all. That said, I'm sure the PT will give me a very thorough going over.

    I hope it goes well and you can still do a little running...I remember quite well what it was like last winter when I had hamstring and guad problems, I hope it resolves quickly!

    Thanks! Frankly, I can handle quite a bit of pain when I'm actually exercising (not that I recommend continuing to exercise when injured). Heck, my hot foot hurts so bad on the bike sometimes that I can barely breathe. Somehow I get through it. What gets me is the pain I'm in when I'm sitting at my desk chair or driving. This current round is about to drive me insane because the throbbing just. will. not. stop.

    I hate to hear that Indy but I'm glad you have a diagnosis and can start treatment. Looks like we will be going to PT together. The doc says my issue is a combination of ITB and piriformis syndrome. I go to the PT this afternoon. I can't wait to see what he says. Doc says he can get me healed up for the marathon but no 20 mile run tomorrow His advise is better to go into the race undertrained than do the 20 miles and not be able to race at all.

    Oak, funny you say that about the yoga. That's one thing that seems to help.

    What a drag! I've had ITB and piriformis issues from riding, but not running. Thankfully, the ITB issues resolved themselves when I went from a triple crank to a double. And the piriformis issues got lots better just from some basic stretches before, during and after rides. I sure hope your PT can get you sorted out in short order.

    Got to a yoga class last night for the first time in a couple weeks (December can be crazy), and I was shocked to find how stiff and tight I was. But the class really helped-- everything felt so much free-er on this morning's run. I felt so good that I added on an extra mile.

    Ugh, I hope you find out that it is something else other than an over-use injury. Sending you many wishes of good luck and hope you learn it is something that won't require much time from activities!
