    I got out for a fairly flat 9 miles after a few days of running around like a chicken with my head cut off ... It was a little bit cooler than it's been, but my breathing still wasn't the best. I'm about resigned to running the half in Columbus this fall, but still haven't made a final decision.

    I declare this year as my base-building year.

    With the summer heat, and the recognition that I am still such a new runner that I still need to build my "base" rather than work on things like speed work (that will come in time....I'm focused on injury prevention and stamina right now), I've started to run even more slowly than usual.

    I'm using this article from Active as my ...justification? Guide? What?

    And I've been thinking about HR rates....Staying in Zone 2 for some runs, Zone 3 for others. And THAT sure makes me run slowly. I often say, I have a heart like a bird....for the same effort, my running/biking partner and I will have vastly different HR's - mine much higher. Doesn't matter if the partner is male/female/younger/older. Just me.

    So last night - after a 15 mile bike commute day - I went out for my 4 mile loop. After a warm up (although I don't know why I bothered with that - I figure I was plenty warmed up from the bike ride), I kept it in Zone 3, then a cool down. I refuse to be frustrated by my glacial pace. I keep thinking "I could do this SO much faster on a bike!" I figure/hope I'll be rewarded with fitness and speed come those October-December races.

    7Rider, I have a high HR, too. It's always higher than everyone else's, when I am riding or running. It's low when resting, though.
    I stopped wearing my HR monitor because of this.
    I haven't run in 2 weeks, because I've been riding so much, since it got warm out. Getting ready to go out and ride and now, after reading this thread, I want to go on a trail run.
    We shall see. I'll never be a runner on this schedule (that, and the fact I am slower than slow).

    7rider, don't feel like the loan ranger going slow. That is what I'm doing. I had my first week of actual mileage. Today makes 16 miles for the week. I can not think of when I did that last.

    These runs/hikes are on the trail so that makes me feel that much better. I just hope I will be able to loose some of this weight I have aquired since this whole thyroid thing came up about a year or so ago now. But I have to run 35 miles to loose 3500 calories or one pound. So this could take awhile.

    I am trying to eat more proteins, fewer carbs (WW when I do), and more veggies and fruit intake. Lots of water and zero carbonated drinks. I do crystal light now and then.

    Thanks for making me accountable to you all. I hope next week is as good as this week has been.

    Mile repeats for me today - first time since the fall. I really wanted to go for distance instead, but the respite from the heat is just about over and I knew I needed to get some speedwork in while my lungs can handle the air.

    I obviously don't remember how to hold a 5K pace ... so this was obviously the workout I really needed to do today.

    I blew off yesterday and did another flattish 9 miler this morning.

    "Flat" around here means right around 500 feet of climbing in 9 miles, and nothing over 10% except the very first hill after I turn out of my lane, which isn't long. I have only this one loop I can do that's this flat. I've realized that my bad habit habit of throwing my head back comes from always running hills ... on an ascent, I want to look at something besides the road two feet in front of me. I'm going to try to roll my eyes up more, and see if that helps.

    I've also realized that I'm just not going to be ready to do Columbus marathon in any time that would make it worth it to me. I'm inclined to run the half just so I won't be sitting home on race day - but I need to convince myself that it's worth the effort to run a support race, or to do "half" of anything. I also have to decide whether or not to sign up for Disney ... there are a whole lot of downsides to that one, and the guy at the LRS pretty much talked me out of it the other day, but now I'm back to being on the fence.

    Went from deciding not to run a trail race yesterday, to agreeing to the 5k, to running the 10k (and I haven't run more than 3 at a time in, oh, 6 weeks?)

    Great race. Beat my last 10K trail time by 5 minutes and made an awesome friend with a woman who lives 1500 miles from me

    14 miler today. Hot, but not as humid I think. I felt pretty good. Picked up to a respectable pace at time. I will do 18 miles on Saturday and then I taper. Of course these are still FLAT miles. (that is why I am running longer than 13.3 miles which is the actual distance of the race) PPA is in 32 days...yes about 1 month. No, not ready. But will I ever be? So as part of my taper I plan to spend more time on TM at incline w/ super slow jog (i.e. "slog") or walk. I feel I have not put in enough TM time w/ high incline. In realization that I will be walking MOST (if not all) of the ascent. This week I am conquering all my doubt that happened past couple weeks. I am not fast, never have been. But this may be an advantage mentally for me when I hit the incline of the mountain. I have already just planned to walk as hard/fast as I can and thow in a "jog" here and there. I can do this. (I will keep saying that). I have 6 1/2 hours...(still ignoring the fact that there is no oxygen up there!)

    Oh yeah, and on Monday (we will still be there) is the Pro Cycling event starting there (forgot the official name). So I will get to see some of the pro's. I mean it will be a little "vacation" except for the one day of possible hell!

    Sorry I have not been around! I am checking back in. You ladies are doing a GREAT job in July.

    I know it is hot everywhere, and Atlanta is no exception. I have been running plenty though. I am doing another Ironman in 6 weeks, so plenty of 8-10 milers. Will be bumping it up to the longer ones very soon.

    I've been planning my running routes to go by city parks with water fountains, rather than carrying water. Today was 5 miles, 2 water fountains. It's just a slog when it's so hot and humid at dawn...

    Monday I jogged easy for 2 miles and then did diagonals at the football field.

    Yesterday my friend dragged me out for an 8x800's workout. Ugh! I have never felt so ill. We managed to do all 8 reps on pace. But the last 4 I could feel my head floating away like a balloon and my guts starting to burn. Too much humidity!

    I think I'm ready to start running 3x a week again
