    I Adopted 2 Kitties!

I mentioned in a recent post that I had to put down my 17 year old cat in early June. He was the last of our 4 "senior" cats left, and I didn't realize how empty my heart would be without any cats. I thought it might be best to wait until mid-September to adopt because we'll be taking a short vacation and because I thought I might need more time to grieve. I admit, however, that I found myself looking at the local adoption agencies and even making a few trips to see kittens/cats. Finally, last Sunday (Father's Day) I suggested to my DH that we visit Oregon Humane Society just "to look"...just for something to do.

We ended up choosing some older kittens from the computer first then giving the list to the employee helping us. We interacted with each of the kitties on our list. Once the employee knew the type of personality we were looking for, she made suggestions and brought us kitties that were not on our list to consider. We finally found two that we really liked and were at the age we had previously decided on (range of 6 months-12 months or so). I also suggested that one should be black if possible since black cats don't get adopted as much. We were able to put the two on a 4 hour hold, and went to lunch to discuss our plans. We returned to adopt our two girls.

One was called "Biddy Earls", was 9 months old and had recently weaned kittens. She's solid black and the Vet & I think she might be a Bombay, although not sure and it really doesn't matter. We changed her name to "Mila" (variant of Emily). Here's her website: http://www.oregonhumane.org/adopt/ad...nimalID=108398

The other girl is a medium hair tortoiseshell and her name was "Puma Purrsalot" - we changed it to "Violet". She is about 8 months old and is extremely friendly and bold. Her website is: http://www.oregonhumane.org/adopt/ad...nimalID=109209

We don't have children and I always told my DH "Happy Father's Day" from the cats. Now I can continue on with this tradition because we are blessed with our two lovely cats.

I've been reading up on personalities of tortoiseshell and Bombay cats, although tortoiseshell is a color, not a breed. Anyone have either? Any experiences you'd care to share?

    Thanks.

    They are beautiful!

We didn't wait very either after losing our wonderful little Tilda Cat. The house was just too quiet. For me, adopting two more babies eased the ache in my heart. It's hard not to smile at kittens.

I don't own her, but the tortie feral in my backyard is the most skittish of the ferals. Though she doesn't run far, just far enough that she thinks she's hidden but she can still watch me.

She is our colony "babysitter" and is always watching the mama cat's kittens.

Congratulations! They both so cute! Violet looks a lot like my Calypso, and I have a special place in my heart for black kitties - Mila is beautiful. Almost makes me want to go looking for a playmate for Calypso.

Thanks so much for the responses. It's like we've had babies or something. Taking photos, fawning over them....Mostly they're getting used to each other and to us. They were not in a group "cattery" room together, so they had never known each other until living here. Initially we've set them each up in their own room and they were allowed to get used to us in their own "safe spaces" for a day or so. Then when it seemed that they were both relaxed, we let each one out of it's room to check out most of the rest of the house (we did this one at a time). Finally we allowed them to meet. Mila walked right up to Violet as if to say "Hi. My name is Mila. I like you!", however Violet was a little more reserved and hissed and growled a bit even at 6' apart. So whenever they're out in the main part of the house they are supervised. No issues yet and Violet has essentially quit hissing and actually was play chasing Mila this morning. They touch noses, use each other's litter boxes, share each other's food. Eventually they will eat together and their litter boxes will be in one location. However, it's only been 5 days, so we're taking it slowly. They both have good appetites, use their litter boxes consistently, respond to their names, and are settling in well. After much research regarding food, we're going with Wellness Core "Fish & Fowl"-their new formula. They are taking to it well. So all in all a good fit so far.
    I'll keep you posted.

Congrats on adopting two new kitties!

Of our three (all females) we have a tabby (black and gray), a tortishell and a calico. Ariel is our Torti and anything you read that says they act like the own everything, she is very much that way. She also is my husband's cat and gets very jealous if one of the other cats decides to jump on his lap to get some attention. She is the one that sleeps with us. Somewhere, somehow, she learned how to tap us. She will slightly extend her claws and actually tap you with them to get your attention. She does it lightly to where you feel it, but will not hurt at all. She is very bossy. My mom learned that when our cats stayed with my parents for a couple of months when we moved across state.

That's what I've read about tortoiseshell cats. I'm keeping an open mind.

Our three don't get along with each other that well, but no real cat fights at most just hissing and growling at each other. We also got them all at different times.

    Very cute kitties!!

Wellsness is a really good brand of cat food. We feed our ten cats cans of wellness and dry as well. They mostly like chicken flavor, occasional herring and chicken, beef, beef and chicken... We go through many many cases of big cans every month

You are being very cautious and being very safe with the cats. The kitties have a very loving home

Oh, I love your new babies! They are beautiful. That poor 9 month old to have already had kittens, though...oh, she's like a little teenage mama!

We have a tortie. Our Lola is going on 18 and is as sweet as can be. She has really mellowed over the years, though she's always been pretty mild-mannered and sweet. She is such a lover, but even at her advanced age is quite mischievous. She loves to get up on the kitchen counters and lick anything she can. She's hyperthyroid, so she's hungry ALL THE TIME, even on meds.

I just wanted to say - how tiny they are! I got both of my cats when they were a little older and I don't think I've ever seen either of them under 10 pounds. They're adorable Have fun fawning over them!
