long distant commute oui!!

I'm in a process of buying a house in exoburb of Portland Or. This in itself is not a big deal since there are many people who live in the area. Hundreds of houses in fact.

My house in Los Angeles is on the chopping block and I'm preparing for the long distance move, about 900 miles. This too is not a big deal as many in this country are free to move around and move we do.

What happened yesterday and today puts an unusual twist. I had interviewed with Los Angeles area company several month ago. Go in. Interview, answer some questions, exchange pleasantries... Thank you very much and haven't heard from them till last night.

Go in today and was offered a job not even a second interview... Cool ohh but wait. I can't extricate myself from the purchase of the house in Portland. Well the salary is far cry from what I used to make, its about half of what I used to make but heck of a lot better than the unemployment check. I'm maxed out in the payout and it will end next summer. No other job prospect...

So I think I will accept the job in Los Angeles area, have my house in Portland area, and make a weekly commute from Portland to LA.

The house is quite lovely, the best we've seen after month and month of searching. It's about the 20th one I've visited in person and the best one in about 300 maybe more houses we've looked on line. So we decided to buy it.

Then I got the job offer. Well I'll still buy the house because who knows if the job will pan out over the long run and god knows how long my next house search is going to be.

Commute by car is even out of the question. Cycling definitely not. My personal jet will be all blue with 100 channels of in flight Direct TV with reclining leather seat This is almost as bad as when I kept two offices at the same time, one in Manassas Va and one in Aliso Viejo California. Bi-coastal was beyond brutal. Twice the number of office people to remember, two sets of security key card, multiple sets of phone numbers to remember...

Good that I have a job and out of semi-permanent retirement. Good too that I will have a very nice house in Portland. And lets ignore the commute for now. All things considered the pay is okay and benefits is okay too. Yippeee!!!

Congrats on the job, because, yes in this economy it is a good thing to have. That is quite a commute!

Best of luck to you in your new endeavor. Spending all that time and money on planes is not something I would choose to do. Is there any way you could telecommute from Portland? That's what I do. I live in Virginia but my company is in North Carolina. I work from home and go to NC about once, maybe twice a month. Works like a charm.

Whee, sounds like an adventure!

I'm in a similar sort of situation right now, semi-quasi-retired (or as I like to call it, on sabbatical, duration unknown ). At this point DH, who is also unemployed, and I are weighing our options.

We had just started discussing the possibility of packing up and moving from the immediate SF Bay Area to a bit outside of the area. Then, a few days ago, a couple of really interesting job opportunities fell out of the sky and into my lap. I'm going to go on a first interview for one of them today. Funny what happens when you're not actively job hunting, it's like the job gods want to mess with you ...

So, we might put the relocation plans on hold for the time being. Although, my line of work is good for telecommuting, so who knows. If I do get a job, I have an exit day already picked out -- four years from tomorrow. Or, perhaps even Jan 1, 2014.

So I closed on my house in Troutdale. YIPPEEEE!!!

Oh wait, I still have my job and I still have my house in Los Angeles area.

I don't think I will be doing the long distance commute. Not with the new TSA rule. My friend was already groped and she said the woman's hand touched her very private part. And there was nothing my friend could do.

I ain't flying!!! And I don't need to be irradiated like those at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

And the job well the owner of the company likes to call a meeting at 4:30pm on Friday. And I've stayed at the office till 6:30pm on Friday evening on two of the three weeks I just finished. Well when my house in LA sells, I'm going back into my retirement.
