I've been lurking on this thread for the past few days, I didn't really know what to say. Still don't.
My objective in 2005 was to ride 1500 km. It was my first real season on the bike. I am now at 4200 km or so, and hoping I can ride 300 km before the end of December. My other objective was to stop being afraid of hills. That's pretty much done too: I now consider hitting the slopes of the very hilly neighborhood where I live a fun way to spend an hour.
Since moving from Montreal to Vancouver, I have started considering that doing a triathlon is an accessible challenge. I am NOT a swimmer, but I'm learning, and I love running again. I have registered for the UBC Triathlon in March.
SO:
Increasing mileage will probably happen, especially since I will start riding in January, not April, this year. But it's not a specific objective.
My only real objective for 2006 is to do a sprint triathlon in March. Maybe I'll decide to do another one after that...
I will not enter road races... at least not for now. Even the simplest of accidents could be highly problematic for me, I really need my two arms right now, and I find road races a bit too risky for that.
But: I will keep riding with my new club and work more closely with the coach. I want to build speed a bit.
I hear of a couple of big hills around here, the kind of hills that take an hour to climb. I want to start tackling them in the Spring. There's nothing like getting to the top.
Most importantly, I want to keep cycling (and running and swimming) because it helps me keep a good balance and spirit to keep up with my work (being a PhD student). I want to keep having fun and smiling like a fool when I get to the top of hills or zoom down.
I guess that's that.
Oh, I also have an objective for 2007: doing a short triathlon with my mom in March of 2007. She sent me an email today (she's in Florida with my Dad right now) saying that she takes walks in the morning and then rides her city bike around Fort Lauderdale and swims in the afternoon. Triathlon! I called her immediately and asked her to do the short triathlon of UBC with me in March of 2007. I also asked her NOT to answer now and think about it. So I guess convincing her to do that with me in 2007 will be another goal for 2006.![]()
