    Whooo-hoooo!

I just bought an iPod Touch! (iPhone without the phone)

This is to be my personal organizer and my bus-commute entertainment device. At the moment I'm only downloading free apps. I'm quite interested in free books, too.

Right now I've only got 2 apps (both free)
New York Times (search: nytimes in the app store)
Complete works of Shakespeare (search: shakespeare in the app store)

Anyone who has a few good free apps to recommend, please do! Make it easy on me and tell me what words to use to search... I need all the help I can get!

(kinda got a yearning for the Netter anatomy app, but that sucker is EXPENSIVE)

    Hah! Answered my own question!

Bought the FreeBooks app ($2) and have access to 24,000 out-of-copyright books - exactly the books I want to be able to read. Classics! The Gettysburg Address! Pulp sci-fi! Aristotle! Plato! Mark Twain!

The eReader format is very nice, makes reading on the ipod screen gentle on the eyes. Page turns are intuitive and very very fast.

    I'm happy!

I've been playing with the NikePlus app that's native to iTunes and will let you run to a workout and play music with only one device. I'm going to be spending some significant time on a treadmill this winter and didn't want to be wearing a Garmin AND an iPod. The accelerometer sensor for your shoe is only $19.

Plus buckeyeoutdoors takes sync'd files from both Nike and SportTracks so my trainer can work with me.

I downloaded CyleMeter the other day for around $6. It records my ride on the fly, and lets me export the data to .GPX or .KML format. I can then import this into bikely or other ride mapping web sites. Very cool!

I just got my iTouch right before New Year's, and I love it.

I have two favorite apps; I don't remember if they were free, but if not they were very cheap.

They are Lose It, to track food and exercise, and Spend, to track expenses. Can you tell what my New Year's resolutions were?

And I just got wifi at home (free from Comcast), so it's lots of fun to cruise the web while I'm watching tv (don't have a laptop).

Lose It rocks - it has really helped me in my quest to change my body - it provides an easy way to track food and exercise. I also like Pandora Radio - other than that (and Bejeweled 2) I don't use too many apps as of yet.

Catrin, I've got a "friend" on Lose It whom I share info with via the web site, and I swear the only reason I exercised today was so she wouldn't see that I was in the red zone. I love how it keeps me accountable, and the food and exercise lists are so thorough and seem to be pretty accurate. I was right on track with my weight loss last week. Glad to know it's working for you, too.

I love my iTouch which I got for Christmas! My favorites are Pandora Radio, Lose It, (as others have said, it is really great for putting in what you ate and did, exercise-wise). I have one other I like and it is Frugal. It allows you to compare package sizes, etc, at the store to find the best price for an item. Sometimes the biggest is not the best buy. Some stores have this information on the shelf, but more often than not, it is missing or incomplete, or compares two different things on two sizes. I had to play with it a bit before I went to the store with it but it is easy and quick. This was recommended in a magazine I get and I really like it.

Of course, I have Sudoku and Bejeweled 2!! I also have BlogPressLite, which allows me to post to my blog without my computer. I cannot post pictures with this, but that is ok. I can always go back and put them in later.

Thanks for some great suggestions for apps to look at.

I've just seen this reply, thank you for the offer. But my friends bought me a new generation 16GB 3GS for my birthday.

    A cool game is Labyrinth

    I don't use much applications:

Facebook (once a month or so)
My online newspaper (once a week or so)
Bejeweled (only when I'm waiting somewhere)
    TMobilis Pro (that's traffic information)

    That's about it.

    Smile iPod touch apps

I will not consider an iPhone right now because it forces us to be locked into a phone plan that is too expensive, and too binding. No real choices. When those conditions change, I might look into it. So, for now, I'm using an iPod Touch - just like I would use an iPhone - but without the costs of a phone plan.
Using Skype over the net to talk on the phone, local or long distance, to other Skype users or land lines or cell phones.
Given that I run the iPod Touch over the net, utilities to locate wifi network are essential to me. And I have been using WifiTrak and am very happy with it.
Also using an app to monitor the battery : BatteryCharge. Which not only tells you how much juice you have left, but how much time it will take to charge. And what you can do with the charge that is left (translated in hours of surfing, listening to music, etc.)

Other then that, apps that enable me to keep in touch with home when I am away, the apps that enable me to listen to radio stations over the net : Radio-Canada and CBC apps.

I just found out that the REI app does not run on the iPod Touch, only on the iPhone. That's a bummer. :-( I would have looooooved those features about carbon footprint.

I adore my iphone (my work provides it and the service). I will be even more delighted, however, when I can use it with Verizon since ATT doesn't have coverage in some of the areas where spend time. That stinks because I am very mobile in my work and do not work in a typical office, although my home is my main base.

My new favorite app is called EasyTask and it's based on Getting Things Done, a book by David Allen. I have about 20 active projects at work and a very active life, too, and sometimes it's hard to keep things straight. It's really helped me keep everything on track, both personal and work.

Oh, how could I forget my other favourites? Sit Or Squat, a public toilet locator, Toilet Mate (same again, but Australia-specific), and the National Government Public Toilet map (Australia-specific). Are you sensing a theme here? Between the three of them, I can be reasonably sure I will find something local (none of them has every public toilet listed).

Finally, I have also installed Go Brisbane, which is a public transport timetable app. I can tell it my favourites - ie my usual start and destination points - and at the click of a button I can see the relevant timetable for the current time of day. I can also browse the timetables to see schedules days in advance. It's very cool.

    Thumbs up Dragon Dictation

My new favorite iphone application is Dragon Dictation. Press a button and speak. It converts to text that you can then send to an email, a text message or the clipboard. It won't work for an itouch unless you have an external microphone.

    Pretty handy!
