Notes From An Open Water Swim Clinic

    1. If you are swimming into the waves, it is best to keep one's mouth closed when sighting, unless you would like a refreshing mouthful of reservoir water. (I did this about 3 times before I finally learned!)

    2. It hurts to get kicked in the ribs by a breaststroker. Note to self: Do not start in the back as that is where the breaststrokers seem to congregate.

    3. If you touch a guy's rear end while swimming in a pack, you will laugh as you think of the Steve Martin line from "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles": "Those aren't PILLOWS!"

Just don't laugh too hard or you'll swallow more reservoir water!

    4. When you run into someone repeatedly because you both can't sight and are swimming at the same pace- it's nice to high-five them at the end of the swim as a congratulatory "I'm glad we didn't drown each other" celebration.

I haven't ever touched a strange man's butt, but I did once get a hold of someone's... ummm... "package" while he was doing the backstroke, I was passing, and my hand came down in the wrong place (goes back to the poor sighting I mentioned earlier- swam right into/onto him). Made for a good laugh the rest of the swim (for me- I'm not sure about him).

    That is soo funny!
May I add a little pool newbie humor? You might be a beginner if.......

If everytime you stop you burp continuosly and it smells like chlorine!!

If the elderly man in the lane next to you says " hunny you don't need the goggles because your head is never in the water"!

If you have the pool flu the day after your swim from swallowing so much water!

I burp ALOT...although it often smells like lunch or whatever I ate as a snack before. It is hard to burp and take a breathe! LOL

Yeah, my first OW swim was in salt water...my nose burned so much. I think I will try a nose plug tomorrow!

Tri Girl, that must have been quite the surprise for both of you!

Shiraz, I've never had anyone comment on my swimming at the pool. How nice that you are getting free swim coaching!
