Group in Iowa attemping to ban all cycling on FM Roads - Petition Here

I saw this in the RoadBikeRider Newsletter today:

    Depressing News from Iowa

"Shared roadways are no longer safe or practical in today's society." So says a group seeking to have bicycles banned from most highways in Iowa, known for its wildly popular RAGBRAI cross-state ride...

I've heard about this issue before, but now there is a petition against this legislation:

    Petition

When 2/3 of our society is obese, you have to assume we are outnumbered here. Luckily, this is only a group with a petition--hopefully, Iowans will speak out before this reaches the Legislature.

Of course, I have to argue that this would require rewriting State Driver's Laws, etc. That is no small task.

Sounds like our thread on Tour of Missouri and Colorado road rage...........

I'm going to get flamed, I just know it, and I mean no disrespect to any group of of people, but I live in an economically repressed area. It's always the piece of Sh*t car whose owner drives by us cyclists and screaming out the window-" get the f&%$ off the road" And we move faster that some of the tractors.

I hear ya Becca--it's the boys in the really big pickup trucks, that are trying to run me over. Like on that country road, there isn't room for both of us.

I've had ding dong drivers play chicken with me on the farm roads. I do try to keep up with the tractors and ride in their slipstream.

I did try to ride in one of the big tractors' slipstream. I'm not sure the driver appreciated it much, but it was smelly!

I'll put a pin in that stereotype... most of the people who buzz or verbally harrass our group are in late model vehicles. Maybe they tend to be pickup trucks - but probably 2/3 of the vehicles on the road around here are pickup trucks, so I don't think that says anything.

IAE, I feel more in danger from the ones that are oblivious than from the ones who're intentionally trying to scare me. Because 99% of the ones who are trying to scare me would be horrified if they actually killed me, so they leave a margin that they consider safe. (Yes, there are exceptions and people who will literally try to kill you, but they're a very small minority.) The ones who don't even know that I'm there don't leave any margin at all. And stereotypically, those aren't the rednecks in pickup trucks...
