i have a "pie plate" and I'm sure there are plenty of readers of this forum who have the reflectors that came on their bike.
And to them i say there is nothing wrong with that, don't get out any tools!

Whew! I can leave my reflectors on. Good. That way I won't get a traffic citation. I think there's even a fine here for riding in traffic without them.

But (showing my absolute bike dorkiness) what's a pieplate? I have three, but they're all in the kitchen cupboard for when I bake multiple pies.

She's referring to the big plastic chain protector on the back wheel. It is sometimes referred to as a pie plate. Sometimes, it's referred to as a "dork disc." Often times, folks just remove it as unnecessary.
