While I am not an absolute advocate of TI, go and find some of their videos and do those drills: fish, skating, zipper skating, under- and overswitch.
Accurate body rotation is key to being able to breathe on both sides. Once you have this down, you don't have to do TI exclusively.
While I can't comment on your scoliosis - you're saying it is slight - rotation is mostly from the whole torso (ok, the pros seem to rotate the spine but do we?)
Find your balance on the weak side and learn to rotate, use a high elbow, all that jazz.
