Today was the start training for the 50k race I have in August. Since the average temps for where the race is held tend to be around 87f that time of year, my running buddy Maggy & I decided to head out at the hottest time of the day here. Temps in the 80's & 60% humidity.

We were both well geared, carried water and her Hubby met us with water along the route so the heat was bearable. The plan was to go 12miles, but we ended up going 13.45!! The longest I have run since the marathon in May. In the last two miles I could feel a few muscles getting tight, but I am sure some of that is still from recovering from the HIM a little over a wk. ago.

Took an ice-bath as soon as I got home & massaged some hammer balm into my quads so hopefully that will have me feeling pretty good in the morning.

It was a fun run & I had great company which made the miles fly by!

Susan- You have done an inspiring job with committing to your training routine! Hope you are able to get some useful info from the Dr. tomorrow.

I had a 7 AM PT appointment, so I was up, fed, and bored by 9 AM. I had an errand to do in Concord center, so I decided to drive there and run there, then go to the store I needed to go to. I am getting sick of the same 3-4 routes I have from my house and once in awhile, I would like a totally flat run.
It was a good idea; there are lots of neighborhood streets with beautiful Victorian houses and sidewalks, too. I discovered that on most of these streets, one sidewalk is made of packed sand and was great to run on. I alternated between that and the street. I walked from my car to the post office, about 1/4 a mile, then ran 3 miles at a 10:49 pace. It was slower than I thought it would be, but it did include a few stops for crossing the streets that are busier than my normal routes and a couple of 30 second walk breaks. Most of the time when i looked down, my pace was between 9:20 and 10:30.
I will definitely do this again. It was weird to run by the bike shop!

Did some speedwork today on the treadmill. I would've much rather been outside, but it's HOT. It was 100 degrees today and the heat's been doing me in when it's only 80 degrees. Oh, well. It's fun listening to the Ipod.

Susan, I remember reading in Nancy Clark's "Sports Nutrition Guidebook" about a lady who had GI upset whenever she ran. It turned out she chewed gum every day that had Xorbitol (sp?) in it, which can cause GI problems. She laid off the gum and the problem was solved. Simple as that. I know there are a lot of other things that can cause problems but if the doctor doesn't pinpoint anything, things like that are worth investigating.

Yesterday's training plan called for a 90 minute run. I thought that was a lot since the previous longest run was 75 minutes, but I figured I could always walk.

My SO and I went to a paved MUP path down by the river. It's one of the few flat, paved areas around here. My legs felt like lead from the start. I'd just finished an 8-out-of-9 day work week and I was still a bit tired. But I pushed on.

The bottom line was that I ran about 8.5 miles in 82 minutes. That was all I could do. But I did learn something from the run. I can't tolerate double strength Infinit. It really worked my stomach. (I was carrying a Camlebak with water and a bottle of Infinit mixed double strength.) That's good to know for the HIM I have planned in September.

    The plan's working so far.

4.5 miles this morning, out and back in the flatter direction - still a bit sore from the last couple of rides and wanting to save something for my aerobics class tonight (especially since the boss will be visiting ).

In a week or so I'll add some speedwork back in. Right now I'm just logging the miles at a moderate pace, trying to get myself back into any kind of a routine.

As usual, I did a short run in the rain. I had my cycling clothes on, but it started raining, did a quick change and went out. No Garmin, I Pod, water, etc.
Did the same loop of my street, but since it's so short, I ran up the hill, using only my driveway as a cool down.
It started raining hard and thundering as I was slogging my way up the second part of the hill. I guess I ran about 2.3 miles.

I wasn't planning on speedwork yesterday, but the heat, needing to run some errands in town, etc., all pointed toward a trip into town. A run in town is a run on the track, and I wasn't going to go round and round that stupid mile loop without taking advantage of the relatively flat terrain. So, 3 minute intervals x 5. Yikes I'm sore. Good thing today's ride wasn't super hilly.
