    Upcoming Virginia Rides

    To disable ads, please log-in.

Hi all, there are a couple of good rides coming up in Virginia (I'm doing all three). I'm posting this in Mid-Atlantic and Southeast to cover all the bases.

May 9th: Cap-to-Cap ride between Richmond and Williamsburg. Two century options, and shorter options. www.virginiacapitaltrail.org

May 15-17: Tour de Chesapeake, Mathews. Lots of distance options. www.bikechesapeake.org

June 19-24: Bike Virginia, Charlottesville area. Journey Through Hallowed Ground for all you history buffs. Plus beautiful rolling terrain. www.bikevirginia.org/2009/index.htm

    Bike Virginia

I rode Bike Virginia last year when it was in my home area! I have already signed up for this year's ride and my husband is going, too, and we will celebrate our 35th anniversary during the ride! wahoo!!! Since we rarely get to leave home together due to parent issues, his sister is coming to stay for a week while we go! We are really excited as it has been a long time since we did Cycle North Carolina together in 2006.

Bike Virginia is great fun, only a five day ride, and has lunch provided every day! The rest stops are really well stocked and the routes are fun, with lots of options. I have convinced several local friends that they ought to go, too, so I am especially looking forward to it this year!

Thanks for letting others know of this fun ride, tulip.

Thoughts about great rides in Virginia (or Maryland) in the fall?? I'm doing the MS150 here in Charlottesville in mid-June...then I'll need something to aim for in late September or October to keep me on my bike during the heat of July and August.

    The Civil War Century ??

105 miles, with 7400 feet of climbing. DH and I are registered for this suffer-fest.

On a related note, any thoughts on a good, fairly flat century in the DE/MD/NJ area in the July/August timeframe? Something to use as an intermediate goal for CWC.

The Oxon Hill Bike Club has a good list of area rides on its website.

For the fall, I like the Cannonball Century which is organized by the Fredericksburg club.

A couple weeks earlier, there's also the Oxon Hill club's Indian Head Century.

This is the same weekend as the Civil War century, but since I've done the CWC a few times I'm going to try the Indian Head this year.

From the Richmond area (not too far from NOVA, by the way, and a very neat city worth visiting. I never visited when I lived in DC, but now I live here and love it. Can you say affordable??)

The Heart of Virginia is a fun ride, north of Richmond. People come from all over to do the ride: on Sept. 20. Mileage options range from 30-100 miles. See www.raba.org for details if you are interested.

RABA and the Northern Neck Cycling Club are having their annual 4th of July ride in the Northern Neck (3 hours from DC) on July 3. Nice way to discover a new place if you haven't been there before. On the ride calendar of the RABA website.

The River Ride is in September and is also in the Northern Neck. See http://www.riverride.org/ for info.

Bike Virginia is coming up next week...I'm really looking forward to it even though I haven't been riding much lately. KathiCville - it's in your territory.

Tulip, How can I find you? I am going to be there, too. We are camping and have a fairly large group going from our area (10 or so) I can't wait. I hope the weather is better than what we have been having. RAIN RAIN RAIN!

It's so hard to find anyone on such a big ride, although Aint Doody and Kaybee did manage to find me at Cycle Zydeco. And in Arizona, I rode for a whole week with Thorn, had breakfast a few times with her and everything, but I didn't know she was Thorn until the trip was over!

I'm not camping. I'll either be riding a white Bike Friday or a red Luna. I have short brown hair and a blue and orange helmet (doesn't go with my bikes, but what can I say, it fits).

Tulip - I'm not sure Kathi is on here much these days (nor am I, I'm sorry to say). Not only will Bike VA be in her territory, it will be passing directly through mine (Orange, Madison & Culpeper Counties). I am not participating though you may see me out on the road. I may be somewhere along the route welcoming everyone to some of the best cycling roads in the state.

Kathi and I were together all last weekend for our local MS 150. She has a new bike & is quite happy with it. She also hit a personal best in mileage with the Saturday route (77 miles).

Tulip, you have my pink Terry saddle if I am not mistaken!

Have fun next week & I'll do my best to keep the rain away

    Hi Jane,
Yes, I have your pink Terry Butterfly on my Jamis Coda, which is the bike that I ride to do errands around town. It used to be my commuting bike back when I was a bike commuter. It's still holding up strong!

I've been to your part of the state, but not biking, and I'm looking forward to it. I've been off the bike pretty much all spring due to general laziness, so it will be a challenge for me this year. Last year I was well-prepared.

I am looking forward to Bike Virginia, too, and really hope the weather improves. It has rained here in E. TN all week. I haven't had a ride since Sunday. Jane, please organize the weather, will you, please, pretty please?
