    hungry??

Anybody else hungry all the time? Seems like every time I do an exceptionally hard ride, or like this week--try a big hill for the first time, I'm starving for two days! I eat and two hours later-starving again! I'm trying to fill up on healthy food because I would actually like to lose a few more pounds, not gain!

Yep, we're often quite ravenous for a few days after a longer than usual ride.

I just saw the title of the thread: "Hungry??" and I said: "YES!!!"

    I cycle, therefore I eat.

    Often.

I have a small stomach so there is only so much I can put in there in a given meal. So I end up eating 5 meals a day or so. It's supposed to be better to have five smaller meals than three huge ones anyway, so I don't think it's a problem.

Take advantage of the situation to discover new types of food and eat as healthily as you can, it will make you feel even better! Enjoy!!

YES! When I ride a lot it seems like I can never eat enough, and we eat quite a bit of veggies & fruit which don't stick with me long, so I seem to always be eating!

Yesterday morning after my century Sat, we ate at a restaurant for breakfast, I ate a WHOLE stuffed full of meat, cheeze and peppers omelet

I wasn't stuffed either! but I only ate a few pretzels near lunch and nothing again until around 6:00pm, all that protein and fat filled me up and really stuck with me. That is why I did well on Atkins I am going to go back on Atkins for a few days since the century is over and get off the carb craving, I know now that I can do it the low fat way, veggie burgers for me.

I am ALWAYS hungry when I finish a ride, I get lightheaded/headachey when I don't each soon enough after a ride. Just make sure you eat proteins.

What about the other problem? When you know you've eaten bad stuff all day? Do you just ride more? after the fact?

If Corsair weren't on vacation, she'd point out that about 80% of the posts here involve some talk of food.

I eat lots, though I've had to consciously cut back as I haven't been as active for the last few months. When I was running a whole lot I probably consumed between 3000-4000 calories per day!

I don't know what real science says, but I think that my fairly *intense* level of activity when I was running a whole lot amped up my metabolism...and it never really got un-amped when I cut back (but still remained fairly active).

As Trek said, ride to eat and eat to ride.

HAHA!!! I thought it was ironic the headline on about.com in the cycling section was "eat to ride"

I am struggling with those last couple of pounds, not to mention not finding enough time to ride anymore...i used to eat like a pig and i dropped weight like crazy...now i am still eating the same but riding less not a good combo will ride more again soon so i can eat LOTS again soon...meanwhile... "resist temptation!"

After a long ride, if I don't eat a protein pretty quickly, I eat all day. If I only eat carbs, I'm hungry that day and still ravenous the next day. I just did a tough century yesterday, and I didn't eat enough during the ride, or get a protein soon enough afterwards, so I'm still paying for it now.

So, y'all are saying that finishing off the curry (Mmmmm... Thai green curry...) at dinner rather than leaving that last bit for lunch tomorrow wasn't being greedy? I was just making up for the twenty-odd km I rode today?

    If y'all aren't, SHUT UP!

My favorite post-ride fuel is either soymilk & protein powder (chocolate of course!) or fruit juice (e.g., orange/mango) and vanilla protein powder. It is important to add some protein with carbs as they work together - carbs help muscles uptake protein and protein will rebuild muscles. I always try to get something like this about 30 minutes or less after riding.

    Mmmmmm.....food....

I'm *always* hungry, whether I've done anything or not, so riding tends to simply stoke the fires a little hotter!
