The reddish stuff is carbon paste. I actually have to use it on my Aluminum Seatpost in my steel frame (I've started a thread about this elsewhere on TE months ago). Otherwise, it slips. And we've replaced the clamp with a good one

*if* the LBS mechanic tightens it, it stays. Otherwise, it moves. They're telling me if I replace it with a Thompson seat post, it's much less likely to happen.
But a carbon post in an aluminum frame - definitely go with the carbon paste.
