I had a thought provoking experience once at St. Vincent's hospital in New York City several years ago, when my mother was there in critical condition and I had been going there over and over on the train for weeks on end. It was March and NYC was having a miserable cold gray rainy day. I got on the hospital elevator and it was crowded, hospital workers and visitors bundled up in winter coats with dripping umbrellas. They were all complaining about how horrible the weather was and what a rotten day it was.
There was a young man dressed like a hospital orderly/maintenance guy in the elevator. He suddenly said loudly "I'm just thankful to be able to feel the rain on my face!!" Everyone became silent and thoughtful, and ashamed for complaining about the weather. I know they, like me, were thinking about all the people right there in the hospital who would give ANYTHING to feel the cold rain on their faces again, and who probably never would again.
The young man got off the elevator at the next floor, but he changed me a little bit that day. I feel like he gave us all a gift.

I was driving kids to music lessons a few years ago and in the spring and summer in Michigan there is road construction and delays everywhere. Then I had to go to the grocery store afterwards and was going to get home late considering how early I have to get up in the mornings. I was a miserable whiny B*tch! Then I saw a woman in a wheelchair who was probably a good deal younger than me, who had recently had both legs amputated. It made me think of how healthy I am and how most people I know are not even nearly as fit and healthy as I am, even much younger ones. This part of Michigan is not a health conscious region. Seeing that woman there like that really put me in my place.

I hate to rank any of my blessings, because there are at least 10 that all carry the most weight for me! But one thing that stands out is that my unborn grandson has made it to the 30 weeks mark, the same point where his big brother was born, and is already about 3 lbs 5 oz, which is half a pound more than his brother weighed at birth. And all of that with no complications whatsoever. Can't wait to meet him!

    Karen- That is great news!!

I would say my list rotates. Somedays I am most introspective and thankful for people recently lost. Somedays it is my mom, somedays my husband. When my dogs are being unruly they fall off the list briefly.

My biggest blessing to date - that my husband and I crossed the finish line at El Tour together - five years after his very grim cancer diagnosis. He rode 35 miles. I was trying to not cry.

In no particular order. . .

** I'm alive. That was quite a scare I had this fall.

** My girls are doing well in their studies/lives.

** I have a home, however over-full it is with Stuff

** DH is healthy and reasonably secure in his job - which he likes.

** My extended family really cares for one another. With five siblings, that's something of a feat.

** My co-workers at the rehab hospital really seem to care for me.

I'm sure there is more, but those are which come leaping to mind.
