Yeah, at least it would be more scenic and might not take you that much longer--scary thought, huh?

You KNOW how much I love chestnuts! Marrons glaces are the ones that are soaked in a sugar sauce, so not sure why they called your jumbo ones by that name. But doesn't matter. Roasted chestnuts are the best (although I like marrons glaces too).

We also got to see relatives and friends we care about a lot, in both Albany and NYC. Cousins of Chris' whom we love but don't get to see much, AND my late mom's 84-year-old best friend, still as sharp, funny, and cool as ever (her mother was a socialist, her father was an anarchist, in the early decades of the 20th century, and she's a liberal political fire-eater too).

Manhattan looked good and it was easy to find our way around on the subway--better maps than they used to have. And we found a $150/night hotel in Chelsea, for the one night we stayed over! There's another thing you guys might want to note. It's the Chelsea Lodge. $150/night is incredibly cheap for the city--rooms are small, clean, nice, and the location is great. Chelsea's a cool, very vibrant neighborhood. My sister lived there years ago.

Still trying to wake up and do something today.

yes,$150 is a pretty good price for Manhattan.

I have no idea why they called them Marrons Glaces (thanks for the spelling!) but they are definitely a different breed from the standard castagna/chestnut . My favorite way to eat them is roasted too.

did you know you can reheat them and they come away from the skin?

Please explain that---you did tell me how to cook them last year, but I don't remember seeing anything about the reheat-pull away from skin thing. And I get very frustrated when chestnuts DON'T pull away from the skin so you can't eat the whole thing, so please elucidate! I'll take all the chestnut info I can get.

my cousins cook their chestnuts in a 24 hour sit in a big bread oven. Then they store them like we'd store rice or beans.
When they want to eat them, they just put them near the coals of a fire
for just a little bit. then eat.
So i tried the same thing on my electric stove top.
It worked! Stay right there and watch them of course, and turn them over and over.

I got an LED headlamp from SAC and I'm wearing it right now.
Sure would have been handy for that camping trip
But it's also good to wear while hooking cables to the back of the TV or computer

    Good thinking, Zen.

I haven't had a cold since the Bruno party! That's over a year ago. And no, it WASN'T the Drambuie.

Zen - I bought an LED headlamp to use camping and I use it for EVERYTHING around the house. Sorting out stereo/TV/router cables, replacing batteries in the smoke detector, hanging blinds... It's just so dang handy!

I think you'll find it was the lack of Drambuie. I was drinking it purely for medicinal purposes.

DH got a LED headlamp two Christmases ago, finally used it to hang Christmas lights after dark. Not sure why he never hangs them in the day time.

Mmmm, our family trip to Manhattan this week was VERY different from yours but I got some of those chestnuts too! Yummmy!

I just wish I could have stayed another day to attend the rededication Mass at St. John the Divine. But I guess that's the thing about cities... there's ALWAYS something to stay an extra day for.

St John the Divine is the most incredible church in the entire US of A! It is on the scale of the Duomo in Florence and the Vatican in Rome!!

now, I'll continue on with my yawning and groaning (par for this hour of the morning)
