Yeah, at least it would be more scenic and might not take you that much longer--scary thought, huh?
You KNOW how much I love chestnuts! Marrons glaces are the ones that are soaked in a sugar sauce, so not sure why they called your jumbo ones by that name. But doesn't matter. Roasted chestnuts are the best (although I like marrons glaces too).
We also got to see relatives and friends we care about a lot, in both Albany and NYC. Cousins of Chris' whom we love but don't get to see much, AND my late mom's 84-year-old best friend, still as sharp, funny, and cool as ever (her mother was a socialist, her father was an anarchist, in the early decades of the 20th century, and she's a liberal political fire-eater too).
Manhattan looked good and it was easy to find our way around on the subway--better maps than they used to have. And we found a $150/night hotel in Chelsea, for the one night we stayed over! There's another thing you guys might want to note. It's the Chelsea Lodge. $150/night is incredibly cheap for the city--rooms are small, clean, nice, and the location is great. Chelsea's a cool, very vibrant neighborhood. My sister lived there years ago.
Still trying to wake up and do something today.
"My predominant feeling is one of gratitude. I have loved and been loved;I have been given much and I have given something in return...Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and an adventure." O. Sacks
