That's more like something her aunt (me) would do, did. "Help! Police! My car's been stolen. I parked it right .... oops. Never mind. I got on at the other train station today"

I'd want to know if anyone nearby saw the perp riding the bike away.

Happy update! Just had a call from a colleague who had a call from another colleague who had found the bike in the orchard and is now dropping it off in the building where I work! And everything was there. But the bike was definitely not there when I declared it missing, or yesterday when I went back to look for it. Wonder where it has been all this time....But as long as it is back and all the contents are back, I won't worry about where it's been off to. Maybe it just got bored of waiting for me and went off for a little joy ride on its own.

Truly bizarre, but a happy ending! Wonder if someone saw it and assumed it was stolen and planned to bring it back to you all along?

Talked to UK on the phone a couple hours ago. Apparently the guy who found the bike saw the bike, horizontal in the overgrown orchard, but didn't see 5'10" red-headed UK-E picking apples a few trees further in. Anyhoo, good samaritan that this near-sighted guy was, he thought "Oh Dear! Somebody's joy-ridden a bike and dumped it in the old orchard. I'd better lock it up safely back on campus." Happily, it's a small campus and there was a mutual acquaintance who put the two stolen bike stories together. So UK-E will be reunited with her bike tomorrow, and faith in humanity is restored. Or at least, that was the theory as of 2 hours ago. Could be there actually was a joy-ride and dump event between the two stories, or something else entirely. But the outcome is good all the same.
Half-marathon over. Sabbatical year over. It's back to "sacking shirt and oat cakes" as they say here.
