This is actually very common. And it's not just from the pedal threads, but it can also happen inside the pedal axle- where their are little bearings.
If you take the pedal apart and clean/lube those bearings, the ticking will disappear as well. My issue was with the bearings- and the symptoms included a feeling of the clik snapping on the balls of my feet, as though someone was snapping their fingers against the ball of my one foot with each pedal stroke. Incredibly annoying! What a relief when we figured it out and fixed it.

Mine are Crank Bros. eggbeaters. My normal bike tool has an Allen wrench fat enough to fit in the pedal shaft. After that, it's just a matter of following my favorite pedal-removal instructions (most of the way down the page) and not cutting my hand off with the gears on the big chainring.

maillotpois - I'm glad my ticking cause wasn't the same as in that video!

Oh, I see, on the non-pedal side of the crank arm! I knew it was an allen and not a pedal wrench, but I couldn't figure out where the allen wrench went. LOL!

I had this problem! but it sort of vibrated through my foot so I knew my pedals were cross threaded!!! Great to hear you resolved it!

I finally resolved my ticking issue today. For me it was the bottom bracket, but it wasn't that it was broken, it was that it needed to be re-greased. I greased the pedals (the bearings - I wanted to do the threads also but I couldn't get them off the bike!) and when that didn't work I took it in to my LBS. We tried re-greasing the pedal spindles and tightening the chainrings, but when that didn't work my shop guy turned to the BB. I just picked it up and rode it home and was amazed at how silent it was. I'd forgotten... it was SO nice.

I had pedal-click once that was mis-diagnosed as BB noise. When my new BB started to make noise, I thought it would be the pedals, but it wasn't. I ended up tearing the crank/BB down, re-greasing everything, and STILL having a tick! What fixed it was tearing it down (again) and putting teflon tape on the BB threads. It's silent now.

    Incidentally...it's back.

Taking the pedals off did remove the ticking, but not for very long. I could just keep taking them off and on again constantly, but I'm concerned about the safety of that idea. I'm sure at some point they wouldn't be tight enough or something, and I'd only learn that along the way. Plus that doesn't really seem like a good long-term solution.

    Any thoughts?
