But I recently bought pedals and I did consider them.
i thought they seemed like a viable and less expensive option.

I went with Crank Bros. Mallets.
Big platform and I can ride clipped or unclipped.

    Question OT Qs for Zen

Ooooo.... I like those Mallets, Zen. I've been looking for something that has the versatility that the Mallets seem to offer for my stomp around bike. How do they compare for float with the Frogs? Also, are they pretty easy from which to clip and un-clip?

Got the Tioga Spiders on the LHT - you will definitely stick to these pedals! I just had the best ride!

Got the bike Friday evening but it has been raining since then so, this morning was my first ride. Wow! I am so impressed with this bike. I was riding a Le Tour mixte cruiser until now and didn't realize just how pokey she was until I got out for a good long ride on the Surly. She just goes and goes and goes : )
I had touring pedals on the LeTour and was sometimes slipping off those. I can honestly say I did not have a single issue with the Spiders.

Here's a really good review and it describes my experience exactly-

except for the part about beating up the grip plate and they give you spares anyway.

They only have 6 degrees of float but at 26 degrees, nothing compares to Frogs

I LOVE the LHT and am so glad you like those funky spiders. The first time I used them I felt an almost magical transformation in my ride...it was awesome!! I'll take some photos of my AUrora w her spiders today...I'd love to see yr LHT too!
