    Big Dummy on the road!

    To disable ads, please log-in.

Here is a pic of my new Surly Big Dummy, after my first trip to the grocery store on it. That's a bag of charcoal in the bag . . . and lots of other stuff, too!

It is very strange to ride so upright, and not very efficient but it got the job done. The gearing is almost the same as on my Volpe which is nice. I made the mistake or riding this baby home in sandals -- it would have been much easier clipped in on the hills. (Actually, riding anywhere not clipped seems weird now).

So, tomorrow to the nursery to get some potted plants for the patio!

My Brooks saddle is not yet on it and the front wheel will be replaced with a 36-spoke wheel, but so far so good!

Lauren, I just read a review about the Big Dummy in the DirtRag mag. Very interesting! They describe it as a pick-up in the bike world. Very cool rig and I think it's pretty neat you ride it to do errands.

I love it! Like an Xtracycle. Diving Biker has one of those, and she brings crocks of chili to work in it!

    Beautiful!

What kind of handlebars do you have? Are they these from the Xtracycle web site?

Very cool. There is a guy on RBR that has a Big Dummy, with a bike carrier attachment. He rides his big dummy to ride starts, then does the ride on his fast bike.

Wow- that's really cool (and I, too, like both the bumper stickers and the cars in the background). And you live in Texas, to boot- a very red state. I live in the equally red state just north of the Red River, and I tend to have to hide my very blue insides around here.

LOVE the bike!!! I'm green with envy.

    Sweet!

I've got an old mtn bike that I keep thinking would be a good Xtracycle conversion, but I also ride a Surly Steamroller, so know their overall quality and know they put a lot of thought and effort into designing the big dummy.

Not sure I could handle going from being called generally surly to being called a big dummy when I ride by someone though...

    Oh, it's sweet!!!

I think there's a long waiting list for those dummies... I'd be inclined to get the Xtra on something I had (except I already did ).

BD update: took my 200lb hubby for a ride around the block (I think the maximum cargo load is suppose to be 170 but we did fine). It is great on a small downhill with that kind of weight on the back -- I see why the disc brakes are needed.

So today I will ride clipped and I'm sure that will be much easier.

And yes, that is my hubby's Prius. He put over 100K miles on his first Prius with no problems. I highly recommend that vehicle for the gazoline lovers. My 4-cylinder Highlander gets me around when I have to leave town with my 3 dogs. Its an 82-mile drive each way. But now with the BD - maybe . . . .

And I believe they are the same handlebars as shown on the Xtracylce.com site. I just have to remember to duck when I go under powerlines!
