Once I came to a stoplight next to a woman knitting w/her yarn in the passenger seat. When the light turned green, I waited to see if she would put her needles down. She didn't. She drove away still knitting.

Then there's those drivers who take their work on the road. Laptop open and on sitting in the passenger seat, cell phone in one hand, PDA in another all while playing around with their nav.<shudder>

That is some pretty crazy stuff people are doing. Funny but dangerous and crazy.
I have not seen anything that nutty.

Stop reminding me. Im trying to forget they are out there. I sure hope the new door seals do the trick. Last time I looked out the back window they were massing again. YUK

It's an interesting side effect of insanely long tedious commutes.

NPR had an excellent story this morning about people choosing to live closer to work/shopping, choosing to live in smaller apts/condos but where they access to life's necessities without (or with minimal) driving. Since we're house hunting right now, that is one of the top things on my list.

One of my dear biking friends who does LOTS of commuting in the Portland, OR area tells me of a time where she pulled up alongside a vehicle at a light and found a guy watching a movie on his visor screen. Yes, he was the driver, and you guessed it, it's not just any ol' movie, it's a PORN!!!

My experience was with another cyclist. I was doing the Reach The Beach for the American Lung Association and lucky me, I got caught behind a beanbrain who was riding along with her ipod plugged into one ear and her cellphone on the other. She was not a stable rider and in fact I overheard her asking someone else "what are the gears for?" (gonna be a long 100 miles babe!). This was of course in a downtown area where dozens of us were jammed up behind her because we didn't want to veer out into traffic. sigh...

Oh the things I have seen on my commute to Atlanta...

Of course the usual book/newspaper reading, lots of makeup application (even eyeliner, ouch), crocheting, brushing teeth, freaky dancing, physically fighting with passengers...

I once saw a grown professionally dressed woman sucking her thumb going down the interstate.

Sprocket's mom made me think of an incident when the traffic was particularly slow due to an accident. The guy in the lane beside me got out of his car and got something out of his trunk. As he was getting back into the car I saw that it was a porn magazine .

Oooh I'll have to see if I can remember some more good ones...

Ah, I've been meaning to look that up - thanks!

The cynic in me sez no, I don't think it will make all that much difference. I don't see a CHP officer pulling someone over simply because they're yapping on a cell phone. But hopefully I'm wrong.
