yay craigslist does work! the guy posted back that the parts were 1.5 years old, (which is like 1/10 of the age of my bike) except for the crank which is even newer and has half the miles. the cassette numbers are 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 17, 19, 21, 23, and 25; and the crank is 53/38.

The crank is a double and I think I have my heart set on a triple.
My bike is a commuter really so I was thinking of switching out the double for a triple. Can I do shimano XR parts with those or do I have to stick with ultegra? Or can I even switch out those parts because they should all wear equally.

here are my current parts http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...=520&Type=bike

    basically
    7-speed, 11 - 28 teeth cassette
    Shimano Deore LX 26/36/46

can anyone tell me why this wouldn't work?

The spacing b/t the rear lugs on your bike may be too narrow to handle the wider axle required for the 10-speed cassette.

BTW...300 miles on Ultegra stuff is nothing.
I parsed out bits and pieces of my much older 9-speeed triple Ultegra stuff with tons more mileage in '05 and got about $325.

that is a good point. How many gears do you think are possible? I also thought it through and it would be silly to buy that set off of craig'slist. if I want a triple I should go for a triple.

Wait and get what you want. Otherwise, you'll have spent money on something that you don't want. Makes no sense.

I'm not going to get the set but I'm going to try and put together a set that makes more sense: short reach brifters, triple crank, and MTN cassette. I'll go road for the cassette and hope I can still go up hills.

I have 12-27 rear cassette and it's fine for hills. I do use that 27 though.
