drat - shattered scapula

scapula is the shoulder blade - the thing that sticks out the back. ER doc kept calling it the "wing bone". scapula fractures account for less than 1% of all bone breaks - most likely to occur in men 35 - 45. motorcycle and auto accidents highest cause.

MP- I knew it! You shoulda come with us yesterday. We went out to Nicasio starting in Novato and winding our way back via Paradise loop and a few other fun roads. I thought about you but didn't have your number with me when we rode over the Wolf grade (actually took a steep shortcut from San Rafael that has a wooden bridge). (We were doing the "Bakery to Bakery" ride hosted by Mark Birnbaum)

At any rate, I'm sorry to hear this grim news. I sure understand how you musta felt when they had to cut one of your fav jerseys.

I'm glad to hear it was just a fracture and that you'll probably be back on the bike in 4-6wks. I found spinning to be my one saving grace last year when I couldn't ride. At least you'll get a good cardio out of it.

Keep us posted on the ortho visit tomorrow. Meanwhile get lots of rest.
Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

Isn't Petite'pois old enough to ride captain on the tandem and you can sit back as one handed stoker?

Sorry about the crash, but it sounds like between falling technique and proper winter layering things could have been far worse.

Ouch!! That is a hard one to break. You hit solid. You're right, you probably saved your clavicle by not putting your arm out.
I hope you are better soon and can get back on the trainer quickly.

FYI: As for the jersey, ladies, there are many ways to cut off a shirt. If you have the presence of mind at the time, have them cut near the seam on one side, right up the armpit. Or if you are sleeveless, have them cut along the seam across the top of the arm on both sides and pull it down your waist. Then it can be trimmed and sewn to save the shirt. I learned that from a veteran medic/cyclist I used to work with.

oddly the right shifter seems to be toast. (I fell on my left side.)

otherwise, seems ok, but it is going for a complete exam before I ride again.

x - the jersey saving tips would have been good. i am trying to think how i could patch it together with a little extra material. it would be one of a kind for sure.
