    reszing photos?!?!

aaarrgghhh I can't get this right and it's killing me....

I'm trying to change my avatar. I found a photo, cut out the part I want, saved it as a new file. Resized it to less than 100sq pixels (the max), but it's too big (45kB). I need to get it under 19kB. So I upped (downed?) the .jpg compression, first to 80 %, then to 30%.

But it's hardly getting any smaller! Even this grotty little photo at 30% is still 38Kb!

    heeeelppp.....

Save as GIF? they use fewer colors. What program are you using?

Or send it to me and I'll do it.

Or put it on photobucket.com then resize it there. They have an avatar option.

Thanks Gif worked nicely, it went itsy-bitsy immediately.

I'm still struggling to get the 200x200 under 19 kB, though, but I'll figure it out somehow. I'm using IrfanView, and am trying different combinations of reducing colour depth (that actually made the file bigger), greyscale (ditto). reducing the dpi (no difference??), jpg-compression and converting to gif.

Feeling a bit stooopid here now...

... but I do have a new winter avatar
