coming from calif I can understand earthquakes! We had a 6.8 three years ago here at the same time!So strange! One person died. And there was a lot of damage to buildings and what not. One town had a sulfer spring spring up in the middle of their town. It smelled like rotten eggs for months!
I had a friend who's whole roof moved off the house. They had to live in their garage for almost a whole year till it got fixed. They had a little guest room in the garage with a bathroom. They were lucky that way.
I am really glad no persons where hurt! Everything else can be replaced!
Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.

Hi Folks
An ammendment to the minor injuries only report
I heard on the news last night that one woman died... not sure how she was injured/killed at this point, only that it was as a result of the earthquake.
There are also all those "miracle/near miss" stories... like the diners at the restaurant who were all eating inside because of rain - if they had been outside as would be usual in Gizzy at this time of year, one of the tables was completely taken out by a huge chunk of masonary... or the baby who had just been picked up a few minutes before the quake - after the quake their was a large piece of wood - shelving of some kind - that had fallen (flown) across the room from the opposite wall and landed in her cot...
Hey Millie
How was your holiday in Gizzy?
Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying,
"I will try again tomorrow".
I hadn't heard anything about it! I don't have cable television and the local news said nothing about it.
I'm so happy to hear that everyone on here is okay. That was quite the quake.

Too damn nice !!!!! Had the most fab kiwi bach right on the beach....spent the days kayaking, sun bathing and drinking wine !!Then went to Taupo to visit cousin, did heap of cycling there ( I will get up the hills
)............ then had to return to Dorkland..... oppssss I mean Auckland........ and back to work
Every time I leave Auckland I'm reluctant to return ( and I live in the lovely beachlands, right on the beach....) but BF is at auckland uni so needs must......
I'd prefer Hawkes Bay or Taupo any day !
Thanks for asking![]()
Thought it would have - I was watching the weather forecasts for Gisborne and like us, you seemed to score some decent weather.
What was the damage from the earthquake like? Much left that was noticeable?
And yeah... many places better than Auckland now. Don't get me wrong, I was born there - but there is just tooooo many people and cars there now...
we got back from Gisborne yesterday. Apart from a few places that were still fenced off, you'd not even know there had been a quake. Being an Australian living in NZ, I was a tad apprehensive about going - never know when the next one will hit. Life there was 'business as usual"
We camped in the holiday park right on the beachfront & it was absolutely perfect. 28deg C average temperature - great for riding in the morning. Made the mistake of cycling to Tolaga Bay (54k) at 11am one day. Needed a wee rest in the shade at about 40kshould have thpought more before I set out.
MillieNZ did you go to the olympic pool - had the coolest waterslide that kept masters 5 & 11yo occupied for hours (and me too!)
The thing about NZ is that a 6.8 quake doesn't really seem to affect much as everything is built to great codes and it's all part of the expected rather than a big surprise. Very reassuring![]()
Aftershocks will likely happen for years, although less frequently after the initial days/weeks/months, and most of them will be small. I was in Northridge (CA) during the Northridge quake in 94 (about the same size) and there were plenty of aftershocks, a few in the 5+ range, which is enough to get your heart rate up and maybe knock something over, but not cause major damage. A 6.8 earthquake is extremely violent, scary, and dangerous, especially when you are right on top of it. I'm glad everyone there is OK.
