I actually got to ride outdoors today! First I logged 15 miles on my trainer when I first got up this morning. Next, I finished my Christmas shopping and when I left the last store I decided it was just too nice to skip an opportunity to ride my new bike. The roads were quiet - little traffic, few birds, no deer or other wildlife to be seen. The cows I passed in their muddy pens looked cold and I felt sorry for them. They must be misable standing in cold mud 24/7, guess I'm too soft. The nicest sight of all was water in the creek beds and ponds. We had rain eight straight days and it seemed to do the trick. It was evident some of the farmers had been working in their fields for I could smell the chemicals in the air. I had a grand time on my new bike and in end I had to head home for the sun starting to fade but there is hope of yet another outdoor ride tomorrow. In the end I logged 26 miles and had an average speed of 16.3 mph.

I squeezed in a quick 7.5 mi last night before dusk, and another 8 mi today at noon. For both rides, I headed to one of my favorite paved stretches around here---a beautiful, curvy, lightly hilly road that wanders past a big cattle farm. Parts of it are so picturesque, it's almost unreal. Lots of cows dotting the rolling pastures; a fishing lake; red barn with silo; a handful of houses. Glorious any time of day, and in most any kind of weather. I love zipping by the calves, who sometimes race along the fenceline to see what this two-legged critter is up to.

Determined to get in at least 30 more mi in next week so I can close out my first year on my bike with a solid 700 miles under my belt.
