Cool Woo-hoo, Dusty's getting a new paint job

I think I told some of you that I was thinking re-painting Dusty, my ten year old dusty rose/mauve-ish Rivendell road bike. I had purchased it used a few years ago, and it had a few dings in the paint to being with, and over the years I managed to add more than a few myself.

Well, I had kind of set that notion aside for the time being, figuring that if I was going to be using her for brevets and such, I didn't need to get all paranoid about getting scratches on her, klutz that I am.

Yesterday Lee and I were in the process of replacing her bottom bracket and crankset (nothing fancy, just your basic Sugino triple) when I pointed out a funny crack in the paint that I had started to notice a few weeks ago, which ran around the joint between the seat tube and one of the seat stays.

Sure enough, that seat stay was starting to come loose !!!

As Lee put it, "Looks like you're getting that paint job after all" - since I'm going to have to get that joint re-brazed, it's a good a reason as any (and better than most) for the new paint job.

Lee got on the phone with Rick at D&D, who does a lot of the custom painting for Rivendell. Lee was able to bring the frame in this morning, and Rick looked it over and said it would be an easy fix.

Back when I was thinking about re-painting, I was toying with other colors, but I've decided to keep the frame the same color. I really like it, and it's very distinctive.

I'm going to the shop tomorrow morning to pick out the actual color he'll use - evidently he has two colors which are a very close match, depending on the light.

Oh, and I'm getting the fancy schmanzy paint job - Dusty already has the cream color headtube, but she'll also get various lug cutouts filled-in in cream as well. And lots of clear coat since I'm such a klutz. And it sounds like Rick can even get the original "Waterford-era" decals as well, with the blue outline that looks so nice against the frame.

    Wheee !

    Oooooh, how wonderful!
Your wonderful bike deserves all the new fixing and primping...she's put enough miles on to deserve some pampering, for sure.

Most excellent! I'm glad you're staying with the same color - I've always liked it. How long will it take?

    Only about a month.

I've been riding Pokey (my 650B Romulus) a lot lately, and since Pokey is my funky weather bike anyhow, it's not a problem.

Somehow the pics I take of my bikes never seem to turn out well ! But I'll work on it.

Especially when Dusty comes back from the painter all fancied up, I'll need to get some glamour shots of her.

Oooh, maybe I can talk Veronica's DH into it.

    Feather boa... grand idea

Glad you are staying with the original colour, JoBob.

Glad you hadn't already painted her so you found the crack sooner rather than later.
