That was not only fun, but I feel a little smarter (and maybe I'm doing a little good, too). But, why do I feel like I'm taking the SAT again- that or doing the NY Times crossword puzzle???

Whew. 1000 grains. highest level 42. Not quite as smart as I thought I was. They sure use some arcane words, don't they?

I wonder if I'll remember any of the good ones to use in scrabble. heh

Just think, there are probably 500 12-year-olds studying those words right now for the Spelling Bee and can whip all our hineys!

You know... I have been thinking about this... and playing again and coming back here with comments on the words got me thinking deep (well- its deep for a Sunday morning!)

We have really dumbed our everyday use, and reading/literature use of a very rich language right down.

Probably many of you have seen the beautifully filmed and acted movie "The Last of the Mohicans"

How many of you have read the book. I lay down another challenge even though it donates no rice. Find the book and finish the first chapter (or even a page)... and then remember that only last century (the first quarter) young boys were reading this... pre-teens and teens... and look at how simplistic that age's literature has become now...

Very addictive, plus I was surprised at all the words I knew. Thanks a bunch for this site. I shall pass it along to others.

Ah... but can they use these words in a conversation???

I wish they would - think how rich our language could become again...

Most of those spelling bee kids COULD use those words in conversation, I'd hazard a guess. They're usually the cream of the middle school brain trust.

    Thanks

Oh My... That is also very addicting. I'll forward these to everyone on my email lists. I'm a vet and have LOTS of people who could kill time all night long at work (I work at ER) when it isn't busy! We will feed them all before weeks' end!

Thanks for pointing these both out. NOT that I needed another way to kill time on the internet, but at least this doesn't cost me like the shopping!

Thumbs up It's not just vocabulary anymore

Did you know that Free Rice has new subjects? Geography, languages, math, art, just to name a few.

    Enjoy!

The grammar aficionados amongst us should enjoy the English Grammar option.

I'm absolutely hopeless at the art thing. Oh maybe not totally hopeless: I'm pretty good at recognizing Franz Marc's style...
I'll get back on the bike soon, I promise!

Wow - I seem to have retained some German after not taking classes for thirty*mumble* years.
