Interesting sign....but is it "All Women" or "All Woman" Fire Department.

We would say "All Man" not "All Men", or "All Female"...not "All Females"

Given that those of us from Alabama are often criticized for our speaking...I finally had my first chance to challenge Southwest grammer!

    Mr Silver,

All Woman sounds like the correct usage to me too... "All Women" makes me think that all of the women in the town must be in the Fire Dept.

That said, cool sign! Is the dept. still all-female or was it just so during the war?

Maybe it's a small town and all the women in town WERE on the department!

And, I think she said that it was all-women only during the war (I presume WWII).

RE: All "female" -- female what??? Women denotes humans, female can be the female gender of any animal.

    Oops, here we go again

Regina, you're right I was only using "female" as an example of singular vs. plural...not as an alternative for the sign.

One night SGTiger and I were sitting out in her parents backyard eating (and in my case, drinking beer) while the kids were playing. My son was up to something he probably shouldn't have been and without thinking, I yelled "Boy, knock that off or you'll bust your damn head."

Complete with just a touch of accent. I don't normally have one, which is why I needed to mention the beer.

...and Bill Gates heard it down the road at Microsoft and got the inspiration for spell and grammar check...

Sometimes Jeff Foxworthy hits a little close to home.

I developed a hatred for spell check when I was writing my Master's Thesis. Apparently they didn't think to put words like Synechococcus or biogeochemical in there.

Lifesgreat: Thats an interesting story. Frankly, I don't think about polygamous women in the same thought as political activist in 1912! It's interesting the presumptions we make in our stereotypes.
