Remove/Reinstall bar end shifters

How does one get bar-end (Shimano) shifters out of the bars so you can switch bars?

And it looks like the bar tape does NOT get tucked into the bar end. Is that right? (trim it with a sharp knife, I suppose.)

Lisa described the process for the first part well enough.

I don't tuck tape into bar ends anyway. I can never get it quite right and if you are going to be putting something in there that you may want to take out from time to time (like bar end shifters), it just makes it easier.
