I agree, I used to be a regular reader/poster on another board, and I visited the women's forum on it. Eden told me to come check out TE, and now I am on TE regularly(i.e. multiple times a day) where I now only check the other one once or twice a week.

I feel like everyone here is welcoming and open to everytime of person(can't say women because we go beyond that here with a few great men), no one is put down because of a question asked or something they have or do, instead it is looked at as being a good quality that someone might be into something that you aren't- diversity is not looked down on.

TE is indeed unique (in a good way ). I know when I come here I have to mentally switch gears and drop the combative mode I have on the "other" boards.

I don't post here, or anywhere for that matter, very much, but I just want to say that you ladies have class. Most other forums make my blood boil. I don't mind some snark, but rude and cruel remarks are so childish. This place is always a joy to visit.

I don't hang out on any other forums. Sometimes I visit BikeJournal, but I don't hang out there. That one is also pretty civil.

I like having this forum where people are more respectful of each other. I guess it's because women are generally more sensitive and thoughtful.

It's not that were women...it's that we are women who have an physical outlet that helps us remain sane.

I belong to a couple of other all women boards and civility and tact are quite often foreign concepts.

So now that I'm contemplating hosting a forum myself (adding an on-line discussion element to a professional society's membership journal I edit), I'd welcome any tips from the moderators as to how much work that is and how they go about doing it.

So now that I'm contemplating hosting a forum myself (adding an on-line discussion element to a professional society's membership journal I edit), I'd welcome any tips from the moderators as to how much work that is and how they go about doing it.

It's not that much work to moderate when everyone is well behaved and civil. I think the larger the board, the harder it gets. Some boards have strict rules, others are looser. It helps to know your member base.

If you think that your board will have some nasty fighting--have strict rules, and stick to them. Don't let one or two members get out of hand. You'll be accused of playing favourites if someone gets banned, and a perceived favourite does the same, and doesn't get banned. As a moderator, your biggest function (after getting rid of spammers) is to be HELPFUL. Welcome people, make them feel they are adding to the depth and breadth of a board. Don't belittle people. If you need to correct someone, try to do it without sounding spiteful, or condescending.

One last thing--have a hidden forum if you are not the only moderator, and use that as a 'test' forum. Make certain that your moderators (or you) can ban someone without taking out another user or two as collateral damage. Have your moderators practice thread merges and moves, deleting threads and posts, etc.

Even though one or two ladies on this forum might be nasty, I LOVE THE SUPPORT AND THE LADIES. I can't say enough good about the way most of us are respectful and helpful. This is a top notch place to be!
