Puffins and Mountain Biking

Those are cool pictures! I have a friend who sent me some lighthouse pictures from Washington. It's neat to see the one you took from Maine. I like lighthouses. I've never seen a log bridge. It looks scary. I think I'd fall off. Is it hard to cross? It looks fun though. Pretty place to ride!

It took me two days to finally have enough confidence to ride over one, and it was only 6 inches or so off the ground. Skill wise it's just holding your line. I've ridden through lots narrower places. But if you're riding one that's high up, you HAVE to hold that line. I never did ride the one Thom did. It was wider than the one I did ride, but his had about a three foot drop. And my head wasn't into that. Funny what two big accidents will do to your head.

Looks like you had fun in Bradbury! We call those log bridges "riding the skinny" here. Takes some practice, and if there is any room for error, I generally walk . Oh - and they are still called switchbacks even if the ground is flat - welcome to riding in New England - quite a bit different from CA...

welcome to riding in New England - quite a bit different from CA...

Bradbury was an absolute blast and only 30 minutes from my sister's place in Windham. Thom and I talked a lot about how we'd change our bikes if we lived there. It's such a different environment - disc brakes because it's wet, rear suspension and a higher bottom bracket would help with those roots and rock walls. I'd probably take off my big ring and replace it with a crash guard. Out here most of my mountain biking is done in my granny gear, which I never used in Maine.

Yup - most folks here ride full suspension in the woods, unless on singlespeeds (some of us are gluttons for punishment ). What you need to ride here is something like my new ride (although I still have to remove the big ring and replace with a bash guard - it's only got one ride on it so far).
