Speedplay Zero Cleats

I'm a new convert to Speedplay Zeros and am loving everything about them.
Just a quick question regarding the screws that hold the cleats in place (the cleat fastening screw, not the base plate screws).

I've lost two screws from one of the cleats, as screwing them up too tightly stops the cleat from releasing, so I had to leave some play in the screw (but obviously too much as the screw dropped out whilst riding!). Has anyone else had this problem? Speedplay recommend holding the screw in place with a dab of Loctite, but I don't really want to glue the screws in place.

Can anyone advise about how much play you should have with the fastening screw?

arghh, welcome to my private heII. I have the same problem, and I've lost a number of screws. I usually put them in so they're snug, and then 1/4 turn more. I have purchased the loctite, but I've been afraid to use it too. I think there are different kinds, so make sure you get the one that's not permanent - it just helps hold it in place.

P.S. - Speedplay sent me 8 replacement screws when I called to ask about them. I keep them with me at all times, because when they go, it's hard to get out of the pedal.

Loctite is the way to go. I had problems with my cleat screws until I used it. Get the blue one. You can still remove the screws pretty easily, but they don't loosen up on their own.

Hi, that happened to me last summer, I believe I lost all but one screw. Although, I use x2 model so I am not sure if they have the same type of screw. What I did is basically took it to bike shop where I bought 5 screws for a whopping $1 which were covered with this blue stuff that supposed to hold them in place. So far I didnt have any problems but I make sure that before every ride I check the tension on my cleat. For some reason Speedplays tend to do that but otherwise great pedal choice

My local hardware store usually stocks the screws in packs of 100 for pennies, but is currently out of stock, so when they come back in, I'll have a few spare!

Roadie Gal - which loctite is the blue one? I'm based in the UK and fear the packaging may be different here. I don't want to end up super gluing my screws in by mistake!

It's Loctite Threadlocker. It comes in blue, red and green. The Threadlocker part is the important thing so you know you're not getting super glue. Here's the web site. It's not a great picture, but it gives you the idea. Good Luck!

Its the only thing I hate about my cleats. Fell over the side once, cause I couldn't pop my cleats out. How embarassing.

My SO also uses blue Loctite on his Speedplay cleats with no problems at all!

Hey I have 2 sets of the same pedals & cleats (one for my road bike and one for my commuter) cause I love them so much. My bf put my cleats on my shoes and said that the screws should be pretty tight and didn't use loctite (with the thought they would never loosen, which they haven't).
Thr problem you're having could be from the tight springs, since the zeros cleats are pretty tight springs.
I havent had a problem with the zeros, but it did take a little while to get used to the spring tightness

I had called once again to Speedplay about the problems with the scews (plus suggesting that they recess the screws so that the screw heads don't wear down) and guess what? They just sent me 8 replacement screws - pre-Loctited!

Speedplay rules!!!
