    OT: Movie rec

You all need to go out and see Pan's Labyrinth

It is, quite simply, an amazing movie.

Also, despite the fact that it is lauded as a 'fairy tale for adults' please note the 'for adults' part. It is in the tradional Grimm brothers sense of the words a fairy tale, and as such has quite a bit of violence and some blood/gore to it.

That doesn't change that it is an amazing movie though!!

2nd recommendation, of the highest order. If you have a chance to go see this movie, run, do not walk, to catch it. It is superb film-making, beautifully done. The actors are tremendous, and the stories, both real-world & fairy tale, work together on many levels. It is a movie that works at many levels, as did The Illusionist from '06. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful movie. It does have some difficult scenes of intensely graphic violence, but the cruelty is terribly important to the story. Please don't let it stop you from going, just be ready to dive under the seat if you're squeamish, & DON'T TAKE THE KIDS!

Koala, I went to a showing last night (at 9:45 no less!) and walked in directly behind a couple that had brought their ~4yo and 11 yo children with them!

At the end of the movie I was pretty shocked that someone would let little (specifically the young one) watch the movie! Maybe they just didn't know what it would be like and thought, 'oh fairy tale... that means kids can watch it!'

It's in Spanish, so YES SUBTITLES! (I lurve subtitles... makes me feel like I'm reading a book and at the end of the movie I love the feeling of forgetting that I was reading at all because I've become so involved!)

It's R-Rated! Someone brought little ones?!?!? The violence was intense & upset me as an adult, I can't imagine how frightening it would be to young children!

The titles are fine. There isn't a lot of dialogue, so you never feel like you're rushing to read a panel before it changes. And the language adds so much, it sounds very musical & makes it feel more like you've stepped into a fairy tale, more atmospheric.

I just got back from Pan's Labyrinth - an excellent film! The fantasy scenes are amazing, the real life scenes horrifying at times, I had to look away a couple times. koala is right, the Spanish language adds to the film, I could almost understand bits of it!

I've seen Children of Men and this one in the last two weeks. I think my next film better be a mindless, pee your pants funny one.
