Welcome Mercury/Sarah from SadieKate/Sarah, another Mercian owner. I have a 1981 Mercian King of Mercia given to me by my hubby for Xmas years and years ago.

Email the nice folks at Mercian and give them the serial number. Voila! You will have your info and you can ask for a nice pretty new color catalogue.

I'm lusting after a Miss Mercia for a townbike, not that I NEED one. But then there is Rivendell Glorius too. Maybe I need them all!

Welcome to TE R.B. from another Badger-ette

I live in the Stevens Point area and with four dogs (five counting #2's dog who comes to 'cocker day care' I share your affection for cycling and dogs.

I'm sure the other TE'ers who enjoy mtn biking (like the Iola Bump & Jump) will enjoy hearing about some of the great mtn events here in WI. Do you participate in 24-hours at Nine Mile???

Looking forward to reading your posts!

    welcome bikerz, madisongrrl and cyclegiant3

as for bikerz question "why does it seem to take so LONG to tip over with both feet still clipped in?"

that's easy, it's the "toppler effect" similar to the doppler effect. You know how the siren's pitch changes as it moves towards, then away from you? "toppler effect" is that speed slows down when you're falling clipped in.

    toppler effect

Toppler effect - I LOVE it! It's so true - my buddy I was riding with the last time I fell (as she dropped her bike and ran to help untangle me from mine, while I lay at the botton of a gravel-filled ditch) said "That happened so fast!", but it seemed to me to take about half an hour from when I realized I was heading over until I was actually on the ground. Luckily, blood and scars notwithstandiong, all my falls have been from completely stationary positions - embarrasing, but not terribly serious in the long run. And I did feel pretty studly riding the 14 miles back to the car after the last and bloodiest fall! Everyone told me you fall 3 times in your clips before you really get it - me and my knees and hips really hope that's true! I now unclip BOTH feet every time there's even a hint of the need to slow down... I and I don't clip in until I am well under way from a start.

Trek420 - good luck on the up-coming Lifecycle - I have several friends riding and crewing this year - have a great ride - it's an amazing achievement to even sign up and train, much less complete it year after year.

    Getting to know you...........

Hello everybody! Been reading this forum for a while now and decided to join you girls. So here it goes :-)

    Real name: Marina
Where do you live? Staten Island, New York

Explanation of your handle: Don't know if that applies to me :-)
Explanation of your avatar: what's an avatar :-) sorry!

    Age (general or specific) 22 ( oct 5, 1982)

Occupation: Full-time Student & Billing Analyst

Favorite bike: Just started biking, didn't try many.

What's in your stable? CyclePro (raleigh) Old model but it's my first bike so it will be wonderful for those first crashes.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Lol, as if i ever go fast, I hope i will someday though. I admire anyone who is brave enough to ride it fast and have no fear of speed.
Another picture of yourself or your ride? Don't have any pictures of me riding.
What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Wow , that's a tough one. I will get back on this one
Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, as I said before i just started biking. My boyfriend got me into this, he is a good road cyclist, and I thought it would be great to enjoy this sport together. For now i am just trying to have fun with it and get more comfortable with the speed and my bike. So most memorable moment would probably be this past weekend when i did my first 12 miles. Yey
Most fun ever had on a bike? When I learned how to pedal standing, had a blast and was very proud of myself.

    Hey julbee,

My favorite bike for a long time was also a Schwinn Continental...also early 70's vintage... mine was the metallic red. It was actually my brother's, but once he got his driver's license, I sort of claimed it for mine. I put a ton of miles on that thing and never remember any problems with it that I couldn't fix myself. I still get a big smile on my face when I see on of those out on the road.

I'm also a hot air balloon lover. My mom, sister, and I go to a few rallys each year. We've crewed and ridden a few times. Being up there floating around is definitely the most beautiful and peaceful feeling.

Welcome to the board Julie: I crew for 2 hot air balloon pilots here in the heart of Hot Air Balloon country - Albuquerque, NM. I've been crewing for 6 yrs now and I STILL get a thrill getting them in the air. I always end up on throat so I get to watch the balloon inflate from the inside out. Just takes my breath away!

Welcome to the board Marina: my very first 10 spd was my dads old Raleigh and darn it I wish I knew which move I lost that baby in. What I wouldn't give to have the old bike back - we went Everywhere together!

Hoping to hear more from both of you!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: "Yeah Baby! What a Ride!"

Explanation of your handle: It's my name

    Age (general or specific) 38

    Occupation: Copy editor

Favorite bike: My 2005 Cannondale R700

What's in your stable? See above. I had two pretty new bikes earlier this year, but they never fit properly, so I sold both and got one better bike that actually fits me.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I don't really know. Probably in the low 30s.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'll have to get one of those soon.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Being attacked by a crazed Canada goose and screaming at the top of my lungs.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Pretty much every minute except for that memorable moment listed above. I was recently on a club ride, and the leader, a man in his 60s, pedaled up next to me and told me I was "a good biker" (his words) and asked me if I liked it. I thought the question was silly (how could I not like it?), but the whole exchange made me happy because I've only started riding more in the past year or so.
