Sorry for the sidetrack... I have been to Alaska and South America (Chile). I can say that certain parts are VERY similar, awesome glaciers, wildlife, towering mountains, salmon, amazing rivers. Not sure what you think of when you think of S. Am, but there is some majorly beautiful country there. It is absolutely worth a visit.

But by all means visit Alaska too.

tygab, joining you on the sidetrack ... I have been to Central America (Mexico but Southern part), Europe far too few times. I wanna go back to all these: England, Scotland, France, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Italy especially Italy.... travel is one of lifes greatest gifts. And there's a lot I've yet to see here in the States.

If you think you'd like Alaska you'll loooooooooove Norway.

I use the cardinal i believe. i don't like maintenance fees, and yes you can use them for all the countries listed.

I had to buy a separate one for cellphone destinations in Italy which are SO expensive for some reason.

I call my mom to Ukraine all the time using the AT&T calling card thta I bought at Sam's Club or Costco. But you cannot send this one to yur son. However, any European country will have their own cards that he can buy and use. They are inexpensive.

There is a new service http://www.jajah.com/ which does not require computers and will connect you directly to the phone. There is no charge at all or negligible if you are calling to a cell phone.
