bike socks are ultra thin. you want a tight fit on your shoes whether you use bike shoes or not.
With bike shoes especially clipless if you turn your foot to unclip you want NO give. Foot moves, shoe moves, no surprises.

Even with standard shoes a loose fit means chafeing.
Trek answered it quite well. :-) I alawys wear my cycling socks when biking and running socks for running.
