When I got home from work tonight, I checked TD before I looked at my email. Sick.
Go Roux!
Congrats on a close escape, Lise.
I've spent the last eight nights in a hotel by a Boeing airfield, which has its entertaining moments. Lots of small planes, but twice HUGE aircraft have gone right by the window. Tomorrow night the new roof will be mostly on the house and we get to move back into the basement for the next few months, while the crew comes inside to tear down walls, make new ones, do plumbing, wiring, heating. Eeeewwwww. (After they're done, I expect we'll be in debtor's prison and you can email me there). My mom is struggling along in the rehab place but at least doesn't seem to be in critical shape, this week, anyway. In the last 8 days I have bought an orange Shebeest jersey (looked so cool but arms too long, so going back), a new sports bra like Brandi Chastain's (I still don't look like her, though. How come?), and that damn Steep and Cheap jersey because it was so slick-looking. And some shoes. Huh. Wonder if there's any correlation between buying and stress right now? Hmm. Will have to think deeply about this.
"My predominant feeling is one of gratitude. I have loved and been loved;I have been given much and I have given something in return...Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and an adventure." O. Sacks
Thanks ladies.
Snap - thanks for the drink suggestion.
Lise - I've seen that too. I'm really not sure what they're thinking, especially with the cabs/drunks/drunk cabs.
Tonight we had our kickball league, so I had a few beers and a magner's cider once we migrated to the bar (we lost).
The reasoning? Well, I'll try not to be TMI here. I have what they call "fistulizing" crohn's. My colon thinks it's a fun idea to grow tunnels to various parts of my body. I liken it to termites. These tunnels originate near the end of my colonI have disease activity in my rectum right now, basically. This stuff is a major PITA to treat, literally and figuratively. It's quite stubborn. The GI seems to think that sitting on a bike seat doesn't do me much good when this gets active. It really doesn't bother me on the bike, but he wants me to give my butt a rest. The threat is if I can't get this to calm down with drugs/rest, then we talk surgery. The only real way they do it is a temporary ileostomy (aka bag) so nothing passes through there and it can heal. Takes on average 6 months from what I gather.
So that's what it is. My contention is not cycling will make me stressed and/or depressed on some level. It really is my outlet to get through the day to day nonsense of life. I feel so much better after a ride. So hopefully this is temporary. I can't imagine 6 weeks off right now. But that's only because it's forced![]()
I'll try not to get too poutyI am trying to figure out how I'm going to keep up my endurance for the Miami man aquabike in 6 weeks....He did say it was ok to swim at least!

beta, I am so sorry. This disease rots. Sucks. Stinks. Is stupid. If staying off the bike for 6 weeks keeps you out of the OR, though, it will be worth it. ((((beta)))) L.

Geez Beta - that totally sucks! We'll help try to keep you happy for the six weeks. A little vodka and grapefruit juice might help, too. I'm going to have to try that. Snap - you're always there with a good drink suggestion
Salsa - good to hear you mom is fighting her way through. The planes sounds interesting. They'll make living in the basement seem all that much better!
Roux got another good report this AM and will definitely be coming home tomorrow! Yippee!
How on Earth am I ever going to get all of my work done and clean out my office in 2 weeks? Perhaps not posting on TE while I'm at work??? Nah - what's the fun in that?![]()

This morning shortly after arriving at work I get a call from the division manager saying he needs to talk to me. I'm still in my bike clothes, but he says we need to talk now. So I go to his office (bike clothes, no shoes) and find out that 7 people are getting layed off today, including a guy who is working on one of my projects. I must say this is an improvement. Last time they layed off someone working on my project I had NO advance notice and was in FRANCE on business and the person was a good FRIEND. And I only got the news after-the-fact accidentally. I almost blew a gasket that time. This time I got 2 hours notice. Is this an improvement in company policy? Actually, losing this programmer isn't a big deal since he doesn't know modeling or chemistry and wasn't making fast progress. I wanted to rehire my previous programmer just for the summer to do this project (because she was good) but the company wouldn't let me. Ever since the current CEO took over this company, $$ has meant more than science.

photo up in the pet thread!
We decided on a kitten since we have a resident cat and adding a kitten to the household is usually easier than adding an adult cat. Koji is really, really bonded to me, so I wanted to avoid having him think he was being replaced, but he is also used to having cat company so I didn't want him to be lonely either.
Surprising enough there aren't a huge number of kittens available for adopting right now - at least not at the shelters that I visited. We went to the Seattle Animal Control shelter and all of theirs were fostered out. I did try to contact several of the foster homes, but those kittens (from PetFinder) were already adopted. I had my eye on a beautiful little Siamese mix boy, but he was so pretty and his foster mom made him sound so nice that there were many people interested in him and I was not first in line. At the Humane Society there were only a few as well, 5 or 6 really little ones and 5 around 2 months. Shio caught my eye at first because she is really beautiful - her fur is grey and so shiny so she looks almost silver, but of course there is personality to take into account as well. He sheet said she got along with other cats OK and I got to take her out of her cage and spend some time with her. She wasn't timid at all (which I though was a necessary quality if she was going to be companion to a 3 y/o who is basically still a kitten in a full grown cat's body) and very curious even when there was a whole lot of noise going on out in the lobby. After spending time with her it really would have been hard to leave her at the shelter.
It's taken a few days for her personality to really emerge (she was only a day or so post spay when I picked her up so she was still a bit quiet), but she really does seem to be a good match for Koji. She's tough enough and big enough to hold her own with him, but she doesn't get snippy with him either. He gave her quite the bath yesterday without a murmur from her (in fact I think she liked it). My elderly cat would freak out when Koji tried to lick him.

Mae, my mutt sped out the patio door at something and threw herself at the fence. I went out to see what's up. She was backing an oppossum into a corner and the tiny opposum (they can get big so this one may have been young) had its jaws open and was hissing at her.
I grabbed Mae and brought her inside and the 'possum ran out under the gate.

'possums are pretty freaky looking when they hiss. We had one on our patio once. It was raining, so a wet hissing 'possum is not a good look. Ya know?
I had one of those frustrating days at work where my boss and other people drove me nuts. Only 2 more weeks. Only 2 more weeks. I just keep telling myself that!
