I read somewhere that you could get this same effect by simply lowering the saddle on a kid's bike and avoiding the training wheels altogether. When my brother and I were learning to ride bikes, our dad insisted that training wheels were only a crutch so we weren't allowed to have them. OUCH! But we sure learned faster than the other kids. Hmmm--the sink-or-swim method of teaching kids to ride.
But, that Like-a-bike IS one snappy little piece of gear!

But a piece of wood through a slot for a headset? I'm thinking a child would slowly learn to balance a 2-wheeler just in the seconds his feet are off the ground, then get longer coasts on slight downhills, and be able to balance well before he is able to pedal. I'm off to the dump tomorrow to score a tiny 2-wheeler I can de-crank.
Oil is good, grease is better.

They are über-popular here and very good quality.
Kids from 2-3 years can learn to ride this Draisine and it will help with balance. I'd get one any day if I was a kid....It's a little secret you didn't know about us women. We're all closet Visigoths.

I've seen 3 different kids using these like-a-bikes in my neighborhood. What a clever idea. The kids are all toddlers, I'd estimate 18mos-2 1/2yrs old range, and they're learning to balance on 2 wheels that young. I'm guessing when they're big enough for a bike, they'll be ready to go. I was a kid for whom the balance necessary to ride a bike didn't come naturally or easily. As it was, I didn't master riding 2 wheels until I was 7. Something like this would have really helped. I'd really like to see these in area LBSes.
