Spent my day on the Appalachian Trail harvesting rocks to build steps. When we want nice rectangular rocks for steps, we plant them and water them and cultivate them for 2-3 years until they are the size and shape we want. Then we harvest them. Unfortunately, we can't plant them on the trail because being stepped on constantly by hikers would deform their symmetry during the critical growth phase. It would sure save alot of work if we could plant them where we want them. Instead we have to wait until they weigh 300-500 lbs and move them with a grip hoist. This devise is a cross between a hand winch, a zip line, and an aerial dog leash. Since we had about 40 feet of downhill in our 100 foot hoist line (1/2 inch steel cable) today, the rocks enjoyed a speedy run until they contacted the rotten birch log on the ground. Then we did the dog leash thing and walked them along the line to their drop point. The final drop required three people to tug the line as the cable relaxed it to the ground. Three new stone steps installed today.
Maybe I should have said that I spent my day havesting rocks and dreaming up tall tails. But most of that story is actually true.
Tomorrow I'll be riding. No more time for silly dreams.

Bugs!
I think I got bit by a spider or something. I've got a red bump on my right shin, not quite quarter sized. It doesn't itch, but it does hurt if I touch it.![]()
Poor Chloe got stung on the nose today. It was bound to happen, she's always sticking it in places it doesn't belong. She finally p!ssed off a bee or something. Now she's got a red dot on top of her nose.
OOoh, I hate that. Sounds like a spider. Itch, no, hurt, yes.
I lived with an ex and her German Short-Haired Pointer once. We were in the kitchen after a walk one evening, and saw drops of blood on the floor. After we ascertained that neither of us were bleeding, we checked out the dog very carefully. Turned out that when she'd nosed around in some bushes and backed out with a "YIPE!", it was because a cat had swatted her on the snout! She had a long scratch. Poor pups!
How is Chloe post-shots?

I'm carbo-loading. Beer and nachos. Beer counts, right?
and I'm being smart, carbo loading in advance. A week in advance... but who's counting?
Gotta go to bed now, cuz I have a date with the algae and milfoil at 8:30 a.m.
One last look at the Waterford before I go.
G'night!

I want to thank you ladies for keeping me company for a good chunk of my shifts... I'm here 'til 11 tonight, but 1 on weeknights, and the boredom's pretty painful.
*hugs!*
Just got home from seeing an awesome blues guitarist. Jack Semple. Probably a Canadian so none of you will know him of course...
Knottedyet - beer does count as carbo loading. I'm sure of it. And sips don't count as calories, no matter how big they are. I'm sure of it.![]()
Kitsune - what do you do for a living at midnight? I really enjoy your sense of humour - nice to have you here...
DebW - your rock collecting story is ever so much more interesting than my wall building. Wish I could write like that. You need to post on Kits' Lit thread...
You are just 5 days younger than my daughter.... Born on her due date....
Brix
The measurement of soluble solids in grapes at harvest, taken with a refractometer and expressed in degrees. In unfermented grapes, degrees of Brix are approximately the same as percent of sugar. After fermentation, the alcohol concentration is roughly half the sugar concentration of the juice. Thus, grapes harvested at 22.5 degrees Brix will produce a wine with an alcohol content between 12.5 to 13.5%.

Good morning!
I'm still undecided on my new shorts. I like the length and they wick really well, but my girlie bits went numb after about 10 miles. Uh - that's not good.
Lise - glad to hear you at least tentatively like the Zero X. MWBR, I suppose!
FishJr starts school tomorrow! That's so freaky! I can't believe it. I hope I don't cry.

Fish - So sweet that your daughter starts school tomorrow! You'll be fine. Funny, I never cried when my kids started school - I was just so happy to have a half day to myself. Now at work, when I see moms dropping off their kids on the first day, I do get teary-eyed...
Chick - wine is a fruit - good one!! I have to remember that. I had more than my fair share if fruit last night at the concert....
