I'd just like to report how mellow I feel tonight. You'd think menstrual cramps for the first time in years would have me down, right? No, Bubba loaded me up with Vitamin I and then I made Mojitos while he made the bruschetta. There was just this little bitty amount of mix leftover that was looking very lonely. I couldn't let it languish there, could I? I had to do my civic duty, right?

    Hey Maillotpois,

I saw your pic of you on the Alpe d'Huez! (is that grammatically correct?) So cool! How much of that climb did you do - knowing you, probably all of it?

When were you in France? DH and I are hoping to go to France next summer because he's always wanted to do parts of the TDF route. We want to travel fairly inexpensively but not uncomfortably. I'd love to get any feedback / suggestions etc. Did you rent bikes? Now that I've been biking for a whopping 5 months, I am hoping that I'll be up for doing some riding there as well by next summer. Feel free to PM me if you have any advice.

    Kelownagirl -

You knew where to find me - eh?

We were in France 2 years in a row when we were really living above our means... I have so much to tell. It was AMAZING. Highly recommended. I will PM you with more. But let me know what your priorities are - riding, seeing the tour, where do you want to be, etc.?

In 2003 we went with Backroads - super epic bike riding trip with deluxe accommodations. DH brought his bike and I used theirs. That's when I did Alpe d'Huez. Yes, all of it. We also rode Ventoux, the Izoard, Galibier and Lautaret. And some great rolly stuff between Gap and Provence.

In 2004 we rented an RV and brought the kid and camped on the sides of roads. Also epic in a very different way which involved drinking pastis with BElgians and emptying poop tanks. We were going to bring bikes and the tandem (for the PP) but ended up deciding against bikes. Probably wise.

We are actually hoping to go next year. Maybe rent a house to use as a base of operations with DH's family. MWBR.

Thanks for getting back to me. Erik went to Europe years ago but I've never been. I actually don't even know enough to know what part I want to focus on but Erik thinks we'll focus on the southern part mostly. We'll be in France for about 2 weeks in July (will probably spend at least a couple of days in London and 4-5 days in Denmark visiting his family.) We likely won't do any organized bike tours - it would be nice but I don't think we can afford it. We want to see at least part of the Tour, and then rent bikes and ride, probably out-and-back trips from whatever town we happen to be in. Erik definitely wants to do one of the hard cimbs - maybe I will try too, who knows. We want to stay in B&B's, hostels, maybe rent something for a short term, whatever... but not 5 star hotels We're just starting to do some planning so I'm not even sure what to ask at this point. However, I don't want you to have to type tons and tons. I can probably tell you more about what we envision doing and you can perhaps point me in the right direction? Thanks!!
