Puffins and Mountain Biking

Thom and I talked a lot about how we'd change our bikes if we lived there. It's such a different environment - disc brakes because it's wet, rear suspension and a higher bottom bracket would help with those roots and rock walls. I'd probably take off my big ring and replace it with a crash guard. Out here most of my mountain biking is done in my granny gear, which I never used in Maine.

Yup - most folks here ride full suspension in the woods, unless on singlespeeds (some of us are gluttons for punishment ). What you need to ride here is something like my new ride (although I still have to remove the big ring and replace with a bash guard - it's only got one ride on it so far).

p.s. Any riding I've done in CA has definitely been much hillier than what you would find most anywhere here...
