Yes, the hills around here can be serious, and the gearing is what lets me ride (veeerrryyy slowly) up them, rather than walk!

No, they just help this heavy rider get up the Bay Area hills! The range of the gearing is great - 11-34 in back and 24-38-52 in front, and I've got everything from 2.6 mph going up (that takes some serious balance skills, let me tell ya!) and 40+ mph going down! This is the range I had on my old bike, and I think it is just the ticket for me.
* weighed by getting a friend to stand on the bathroom scale, with and without the bike! Probably not scientifically accurate!
