    a chuckle from the Giro

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I'm reading the live commentary of today's stage of the Giro d'Italia on cyclingnews.com and I came across this:

    ---------------------------
    16:13 CEST 190km/46km to go
This [climb] is nasty: 18%. [...]

Belotti rides a bit ahead of the peloton, which starts to break up on the climb.

    16:15 CEST
Pellizotti's heart rate has risen to 176/190 (92%) and he's only doing 14 km/h! That gives you an idea of how tough this climb is.
    ---------------------------

Gee whiz, "only" ~ 9-10 mph on an 18% grade.
    I hate these guys sometimes.

I hate them all the time! It takes me 50 minutes to go up Sierra Road. I think they did it in like 20.

The plan de Corones is going to slow them down a bit I think. But not too much!

Here would be the commentary on me:

Lise's heartrate has risen to 187! And she's only doing 7 mph! That tells you how intense this mild headwind is on a perfectly flat surface!

    These people are amazing.

Weeeelll. I couldn't do 10mph on an 18% grade. I couldn't even stay on the bike on an 18% grade. But my 92% is the same as his and I'm a 56-year-old lady. So there.

Of course, I hit 92% going up an imaginary hill in spin class, and it's probably only a 5% grade if they actually measured the resistance I put on. So I guess while I may have the heart of a Giro rider, I don't have the leg muscles.
Half-marathon over. Sabbatical year over. It's back to "sacking shirt and oat cakes" as they say here.

Heck if you read my recent ride report, you'd see that I can't do 10mph on a 15% downgrade AND, I have perfected riding up a grade at 3.8mph without falling over

Those guys are amazing! Lise, you crack me up!

I was doing 7mph on 9% grades yesterday. Don't know what my heart rate was, but I could have puked up a Love Bug and there aren't even any around here.

Hey Snap... is that 12mph over a hilly course... (I don't care what grade - any rises) - thats what, 19kph? you're doing ok, gf

And Beta... a lovebug? as in a Mini (car)? and 7mph is 11-12kph? Yeah, about my max on that kind've hill -drops back to about 6kph at the end of our farm where there's a 4-500metre 11% climb to get home.

Hey RR, I was referring to Nanci's post on the bugs in FL. I did think about VW's at first when I saw the title too.

I read your report before I read Nanci's post. I thought you meant you felt so ill you could have puked up an adorable VW bug from the 60s era, as well. L.

Now, Tracy, these are skills, as Napolean Dynamite would say! L.
