    Pre-Race: The Day Before

    To disable ads, please log-in.

    Hi All,
Another newbie triathlete and longer time lurker. I did my first tri last month and am doing a second in July, both Sprint Tris.

I am learned a lot by reading some of the posts on this site.

I had a question about the day before the race. Do most people take the day off and totally rest or perhaps do an easier bike ride or run?

The races are usually on Sunday here and its hard to do nothing on Saturday especailly if its nice out - but I also want to make sure I have all my energy for race day.

Most of my tris are out of town so Saturday ends up being a travel day and a forced rest day. If you feel you must do something, stick to shorter, low effort stuff, maybe something unrelated to tri like yoga or a nice walk.
I'd rather be swimming...biking...running...and eating cheesecake...

Some do a short unit of any one of the sports in the last 3-4 days, with some fast paced pick-ups (e.g. a few 25's in the pool, a few strides on a run, or a few short race-pace intervals on the bike).

And of course you get spaghetti the night before. And you can obsess over your packing list.

If you remember that rest and recovery are as important (maybe even more important) to your success as your workouts, then it will be easier for you to do it.

    Hi sgf,
I'm not a tri person, but I noticed you're in Hudson; I used to teach there!
Where do you ride for training?

And everyone here is right. Rest is as important as the other stuff.

    Hi All,
Thanks for the feedback. I do know how important recovery is, its just so hard for me. For me 1st race I started tapering it down on Wed, Friday I just did Yoga and Saturday I went for a short walk but nothing strenous.
I pretty new at this as I was primarily a biker who added running for x-training...

    Crankin,
I usually ride in the Central Mass Area - Hudson/Bolton/Berlin/Harvard etc.. I ride alot on my own and then with AMC Worcester on Thursday Nights (except we keep getting rained out) and with NVP on weekends sometimes. Tomorrow I am planning to do the Summer Solistice Ride with CRW, this will be my first time riding with them. I have some great routes in the Central Mass Area can share if interested.

I ride a lot in Harvard, Bolton, too. I did a few rides with Worc. AMC, in fact I led a few rides for them, but now I just lead with the Boston chapter. Have fun on the solstice ride; I ride with the Wednesday Wheelers every couple of weeks, (part of CRW) but their regular rides are too fast for me.
My husband used to ride with NVP and a couple of years ago, I had a student whose dad was the president. It was very cool to have a seventh grader who would write in his journal about his rides!
If you don't mind, I'd love to see some of your routes. PM me.
