I'm glad you asked that, I have that problem as well.
Considering the original article references Ironman competitors, I'd say a running/tri store would be a good bet.

I saw an article on compression sport socks in the NY Times last week. They rated several pairs. The person rating was a runner. I wonder if they would be good for biking. I have had issues since June with ankle/lower leg swelling and been through the gamut of tests, and the p.t. did compression bandaging on me and wanted me to get compression garments. I didn't do it as the bandaging cost me almot $200 and the garments would be even more. Through it all I'v biked a couple thousand more miles, including 2 week long trips and a couple centuries and an MS 150. So I wondered if just wearing sports compression socks would improve performance (like they do for runners) and resolve the problem. I hate the drug store compression hose. ANy thoughts? ALso, I don't know where to buy them locally. Maybe a triathlete store?

I see quite a few searching on amazon:

I have seen compression socks in the sock section at Kmart. They basically looked like dress socks, but were compression. They probably had sports ones as well.
If you know anyone that's had surgery or a long hospitalization lately and they're the sort that takes everything in the hospital room home, they probably have a couple sets of compression stockings that they have no idea what to do with, but took home 'cause they cost their insurance company a couple hundred dollars or something insane.
I didn't have socks in the hospital, but I did have these nifty things that wrapped around my lower leg. They were connected to an air pump, it was like having a constant leg massage.![]()
