I always make a conscious effort to drink during rides, however cool it is or how un-thirsty I am. I am not saying 'slosh away' but drink before you are thirsty, as by the time you are, you are dehydrated. When it is hotter, I also try to drink more electrolyte drinks and have bloks/chews. If you are working out and sweating, you should be drinking.
I used to get cramps when I went mountain biking in the 90s. I never took enough water (just a 70oz Camelbak for my 3 hr ride at 95f+), so I metered it out, always feeling thirsty, to make it last. Maybe I have grown smarts with age, but now I take 100oz of water + a 24oz bottle with electrolyte drink mix (GU). Today, I rode for 2 hrs, drank all the electrolyte, and 85% of the Camelbak. It was 81f to 93f on an out 'n back climb. Maybe that's a lot of water to some?? But I don't get cramps, never get thirsty, and the heat does not seem as bad.
