    Thumbs up First Day Training

Today was my first "official" training day with Team in Training. I'd had a lousy week, not sleeping well -- that kind of good stuff. I wasn't sure I'd have the energy to walk four miles; during the week my trek around the hospital campus was wearing me out. Not a good sign.

As usual, I woke up about 4:00 am, and couldn't get back to sleep I finally snoozed for awhile, then dragged myself out of bed at 6:00. Muesli and a banana for breakfast, a quick cup of coffee, and I was out the door. I met up with my team mates in Campbell, and after a few announcements we were set to go. I and a few others started last, we missed an informal session Wednesday where "walking technique" was taught. Our coach showed us how to hold our arms, swinging from the shoulder. I thought it was silly, but soon realized it did help with pacing and energy.

Before I knew it, we'd done a mile, and stopped to stretch, then continued on. The MUT was full of people! At 7:00 in the morning -- doesn't anyone sleep in!? I was fascinated with the sights, I'd only ridden my bike on this trail, and that was a few years ago. Oh look! A dog park! I'll have to bring Chloe back! OMG---we're at the turnaround already, heading back. I think having team mates to chitter chat with helps pass the time, before we knew it, we were back to the start point. I stretched some more, and was pretty surprised at how good I felt! My feet were a touch sore, and HOT, but all in all I was very happy.

Next we went to a Shoe Clinic! Yay, everything you wanted to know about shoes, socks, and clothing, as well as a little bit about nutrition and hydration. I kept thinking how similar everything was to cycling -- eat before you're hungry, drink before you're thirsty, keep an eye on the color of your pee........OK, TMI?

A few of us stayed behind to get fitted for shoes, I knew the ones I was wearing were not good for long distance walking. My suspicions were confirmed, I have a high arch and I am a supinator-I walk on the outside of my foot. The shoe person brought out about four different shoes for me to try, I fell in love with a pair of Brooks, called Ghost. Super lightweight, breathable, and so comfortable. They felt like slippers, only with support.

Wow, I've written a small novel here! I'm still a little bit nervous about the actual half marathon, but I am determined! I can do this!

Yippee for your first training day with TNT! You're not only going to DO the half, you're going to do it in style (I, too, love my Brooks) and you're going to have a TON of fun!!! The few years I spent working with TNT (fundraising and mentoring) were some of the most fun times I had. I'm glad you found the clinic to be helpful, and that you walked away with a good pair of shoes. Funny how cycling and walking/running distance is very similar in the nutrition area. Too bad they are different muscles, or I might be better at both.
Keep us updated on your progress- we love to hear all about it!

I did Nike San Fran in '05, and it was the MOST fun I've ever had doing a marathon. I still wear my Tiffany necklace everyday to remind me of not only my accomplishment, but all the people who fight for their lives with blood diseases. Kudos to you!
